How Long Should I Pump After Removal of Amalgam Filling?

I had an amalgam filling replaced with a crown yesterday and feel terrible as I didn't know there was a chance for vaporized mercury to get in my system. My dentist and doctor both said dental work is fine. I've been pumping and dumping since then, but it's hard to keep up with pumping and I don't want my supply to go down. I have a three month old so am super worried and want him safe. I read on some sites they recommend 2-3 days to pump and dump. But it sounded like mercury gets into your bloodstream when vaporized, so I would think I'd need to pump and dump a lot longer then some sites say there is much more mercury entering our system from tuna and power plants. Any one else out there in a similar boat?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the responses. I should have mentioned I'm feeding my son from my frozen milk stores, we haven't switched to formula. And yes, I guess from this I've learned I don't necessarily trust my dentist and should switch. I went in yesterday to fix this crown and felt confident it was the right thing to do, but it doesn't seem they follow recommended protocol for amalgam removal so I was worried. Now I know. I'm going back to breastfeeding now anyway. I'm sure I get mercury from living in a town with a coal fired power plant and from eating fish as well.

Mom of 4 here who breast fed them all. Personally this wouldn't have even crossed my mind. Totally up to you but honestly this wouldn't have been a blip on my radar.

I would call La Leche League's support line and talk to someone directly. They have numbers for each state. They have a medication/toxins section on their website, but for particular concerns, they advise calling.

ETA: I should add that I'm with the other moms on this one - if your dentist and doctor both said you were fine, I myself would take their advice.

There are a lot of conspiracy-pseudoscience sites to scare yourself silly with. Google is not your friend right now. Your doctor and your dentist have both reassured you, but instead of trusting them you're seeking out opinions from non-medical strangers on the internet. Your reason for doing that is what you should be questioning.

Never trust Dr. Google.

Honestly, if your doctor and dentist both say it's ok, I really would trust that. I know that mercury is not something to take lightly, but really, if they say it's safe, I wouldn't think twice about it. If you're really concerned, lay off the tuna for a couple of weeks.

I think depriving your baby of your milk is a much bigger factor to consider, since your doctor and dentist have both reassured you. Your baby needs those nutrients and you both could benefit from the bonding moments!

Do you not trust your Dentist and Dr.? If not, then get a new medical team.

Never trust Dr. Google over your medical team. Dr. Google is known for making everyone think they are dying and instilling unwarranted fears.

Ask for a blood test if you want to be on the safe side. It is not too expensive. You can do a regular check up at the Dr office.
