My daughter just turned one and my doc told me to get her off of formula and rice and to start whole milk and feed solids.

We have replaced two bottles with whole milk and juice but have kept the formula for morning and before bed. We use rice as thickener in her Stage 2 foods. She has her bottom two teeth in and the top four are just cutting through. So her solids are a min. acording to what she can mash with her gums. So since she I feel she isnt getting enough nutrition I have been giving those two bottles.

I would like some adivce on what you did when your baby turned one.

Update:
To another mom's response. Yes she does eat table foods but not many. She currently eating.

7:30 AM - 8 oz Formula

12 PM - Stage 2 Fruit mixed with 2 tbs of cereal; slice of bread & 4 oz of milk

5 PM - Stage 2 Veg.; Stage 2 Fruit; Slice Bread; 4 oz of juice.

9 PM - 8 oz formula

She currently eats: Gerber Grad Meals, Diced fruit and veg, Avacado, Slice bread, Crakers, Lil soups, lil sides, puffs, pasta, peas.

What can I do next?

Hey Trish! I kept my son on 2 bottles until he was 18 months. The same way you are...1 when he woke up and 1 before bed. It was a nice time for us to get some quality time together and I knew he was getting the nutrition that his growing body needed. Switching to milk totally just really scared me until he was 18 months. Good Luck!!!!

Well, my son is one, and he is pretty much off of the bottle now, and drinking whole milk. That said, he eats everything he can get his hands on, and that is where I would focus if I were you. My son has 8 teeth, so he really does eat lots of foods, but you can get great nutrition from stage 2 and 3 baby foods etc. The rice is really just a starchy filler and has very little nutritional value. I would try thickening with some of the pureed meats in the baby food section, or feeding her some of the wider varieties of baby foods. This is my 3rd, and although they have each had different personalities, they have all been off of the bottle and formula by 1. I would really encourage working on the bottle, because it gets a lot harder with each month that passes by..they only get smarter the little buggers!! Just keep giving her a chance to try new things, you might be surprised at what she can eat, and have fun exploring this new phase! ~A.~

She is still just on formula & rice cereal at age 1?? She is not getting the nutrition that she needs. She should be starting to self-feed with easy foods.

Hi Trish,
My son is now 19 mths old and still drinks the Toddler formula.
(Enfmail Next Step Lipil)
Around the age of 1, babies can turn into very picky eaters which he did so I plan on giving him the formula until 2.
He has a bottle at bedtime and that is it. The rest of the time is sippy cups so I just mix the formula in a cup about twice a day and once at night.
I also give him whole milk, juices and water along with the formula.
I like giving it to him to make sure he's still getting the required amount of vitamins while starting out on solid foods.
Good luck to you.

At about 10 months, my son (who didn't have many teeth either) ate real fruit and veggies that we cut into tiny pieces-soft foods, like avacado, bananas, and yams. They mostly mash food with their tongue at that age. We have given him organic whole milk since one, and he has always been big and healthy.

I took all 3 of my babies off at 1. I started by only giving them a bottle at night, but by the time they were 18 months they were totally off.

My son turned one two weeks ago and we only give him a bottle first thing in the morning and then one at night. We only give him formula in his night bottle, all the others are full of whole milk. He is using sippy cups with juice/water/milk throughout the day. We stopped giving him rice cereal when he was about 11 months since he was pretty much eating all table food. We substituted 3rd foods every now and then, but now that he is one, he eats all table foods.

I think breastmilk or toddler formula is great all the way up until the second birthday. You don't have to keep them on the botle to do this, just put it in a sippy cup. I prefer the Step 2 Soy.
Blessings! liz

Hi Trish,
My son just turned 1 two weeks ago and I am currently doing the switch from formula to milk. I started with 3/4 formula(Enfamil Step 2) mixed with 1/4 milk in a bottle and am now giving him 3/4 milk mixed with 1/4 formula. I have tried giving it to him in the sippy cup but he just takes sips and then spits it out all over his lip and t shirt and thinks its funny. Therefore, I still have to give it to him in a bottle so that he gets the nutrition. By the end of the month we will be on milk only. He does not like it cold so I have to warm it for 10 seconds before giving it to him. I give him 3 full bottles a day-morning,lunch,dinner. On top of this, he eats only solids now. He has 4 teeth(2 on top,2 on bottom) so I am still careful of what I give him but still, there are so many options. I have stopped giving him packaged and canned baby foods for over 3 months now. Those Stage 3 foods are atrocious.
Macaroni is good(you can cut it up in smaller pieces),any type of pasta and sauce, sandwich deli meat, sliced cheese, any veggie(you can give her the canned and cut it up or steam natural veggies and mash or cut up),omelettes, ground beef...even the kid cuisines in the frozen food section are good. The chicken nugget meal is his favorite and I just cut them up into tiny little pieces. They are very soft and not crunchy. These meals come with corn and macaroni. He usually eats about half and I save the rest for later. He makes a mess with the sippy cup so I give him milk or water in a regular cup and hold the cup while he drinks from it. This and the bottle are the only way to get him to swallow. I don't know why, but he likes to let the milk or water dribble out his mouth when he uses the sippy cup. I'm not sure how to break him of this habit and infact, I may post a question concerning this.
Good luck in feeding your baby girl. Don't be afraid to give her what you eat. Pretty much everything you eat can be cut up and easily chewed with their few teeth and gums. They make this microwaveable macaroni now that is perfect for babies. I usually throw in some peas with it. Gerber Graduates mini raviolies are good too.
Also, you can make her little bitty sandwich bites that she can feed herself. Just thinly layer a slice of bread with mayo, thin turkey, and amercian cheese and cut into little squares. Put them in a bowl or on a plate and she can feed herself. Of course, there will be plenty of mess to pick up off the ground but its a great way to teach her to self feed. You can do the same thing with sliced canned carrots, cut up chicken nuggets, and sliced cheese. Just be sure to always supervise because they sometimes get overzealous and put more in their mouth than they can handle. Oh, packaged mandarin slices are great too! Good Eats is a great restaurant to take your baby because they can eat pretty much anything on that menu. I usually order the meatloaf with a side of carrots and mashed potatoes and I split it with him. Celebrity Cafe has great Kid's Plates too. The 2 best are the turkey plate(sliced turkey and american cheese) and the grilled cheese plate. They both come with a fruit bowl.
Wendy's all white meat chicken nuggets are great too.
My son hates green beans so I usually mix them in with mashed potatoes to get him to eat them. He LOVES the frozen brocoli and cheese dinners.
Think of it this way: whenever you are eating, think to yourself,"how can I make this edible for my little girl?". She is ready to eat pretty much anything that u eat ( as long as its not tough or a choking hazard). Expirement! Don't be afraid. :0)
