Hello all,
I need help on how to go about selling old clothes and items that my daughter (3) has out grown. I've done garage sales and craigslist. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to all in advance :)

Hi N., you can take the clothes to once upon a child and they will buy them from you.

Good Luck

I tried Once upon a child and felt it was not worth it. It's about a 25 minute drive for me, first of all. You have to drop off first, then go back to get what they don't take. I got about $1 per item. I suppose that's not terrible, but.... My friend said she also tried it, and even new stuff they only gave her $1. I happened to go back later, and found one of my little guy outfits, a childrens place romper/onesie with a little fish & pocket, for $4.50. Of course they have store overhead and employees to pay for.

Around here there is craigslist (which you tried), and some yahoo groups, including:
algonquin sell or trade: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AlgonquinSellorTrade/
mchenry county stuff 4 kids http://groups.yahoo.com/group/McHenryCountyStuff4kids/
lake county for sale http://groups.yahoo.com/group/lake_county_for_sale/

I would probably give ebay a try if you can. I know that you can get boxes from the post office, that they will deliver to you. Just go to their website. I think it might be priority mail ones. You can schedule pick ups. Or you can alway do it yourself with your own mailers & get a little shipping scale.

I am trying to do the same thing with baby stuff so I can get my daughter some new things to play with & clothes for fall/winter.

Best of luck!
M.

Hi,

I have also found a great website called kizoodle: www.kizoodle.com
check it out, it works like a bartering system. You get points when you sell stuff and use them to buy stuff from other moms. Pretty cool, the website explains all the rules, best of all it's free to use.

I sold a double stroller once through Once Upon a Child and was not pleased with my experience. However they seem to have a ton of clothes, and there are always a lot of people bringing items in whenever I go by, so it's possible I just had a bad experience. A friend of mine has purchased items at Polka Dot Pony (a consignment shop for kids' clothes) in Naperville. You might want to try there. Good luck to you.

I don't know where you live, but the consignment store "From my Room" in Naperville is really great. The owner, Connie, is really nice and has nice stuff, and pays better than once upon a child.
If that doens't work for you, a lot of schools have seasonal resale clothing sales.

There is a great site that is FREE to list items in gently used condition on the internet. It is called www.TheKXO.com
There are no memberships, fees etc. Hope this helps!

You could take the clothes to a children's resale shop. They either purchase them outright or by consignment (you get a portion of the sale). One to try is called Once Upon A Time.

Also, for buying a bed, Rooms 4 Kids, sells beds at wholesale prices. They have their showroom/warehouse in Chicago near downtown. They have a huge selection for boys and girls of solid wood constructed beds. We bought a bunk bed set for our boys, and we were ready to pay twice as much at another store - so we saved a lot of money by buying from them.

Try a site called GumdropSwap (http://gumdropswap.com). You can swap from anywhere in the US by sending the clothes your kids outgrow to this kids boutique in CT. An option if you want to get some value out of all the money you spent instead of flat out donating. As long your things are in good condition they don't turn down anything because of brand, size or season. They take everything unlike resale store like Once Upon a Child! They give you points to shop on the website and send the clothes that fit your kids. It's great if you don't have time, patience or know how to do consignment, Ebay, craigslist, tag sale, etc.

Have you thought about eBay? I've had much success selling clothing items, especially children's clothing, on eBay. Signing up is free, but there is a small fee to list/sell the item. I always come out ahead, though. There is a bit of work involved with mailing the packages, but I make that a fun thing for my kids. They like to watch the items get "bid up". It's nice to sell things without people trying to bargain you down. Good luck!

Hi N.,
I don't know if it is in your area, but there is a store called Once Upon a Child that buys gently used clothes/items. It is located in Schererville, Indiana on U.S. 41 and I believe that there is one in Orland Park, Illinois (I don't know the exact location). They have bought many items from me in the past. Hope this helps!

Once upon a child or other children's resale shops will take gently used clothes and you get most of profit, i believe.

Layaway for the bed?

God bless
