How Do You Play with Your Young Independent Toddler?

DD, 16 months, is very independent and can play by herself for quite some time. Is this a normal phase? Sometimes she will bring something to show me, but I feel like she doesn't need me except for feeding her, changing her, etc. Help!

What can I do next?

My first child was like that...so independent. But one day I just sat down and started playing with her, even though she didn't ask...and she was overjoyed. I was so surprised...it wasn't that she didn't want or need me to play with her...she just was such a good girl, she didn't ask.

It's really a blessing with a child like this, believe me...you can sit down each day and spend some quality play time, but at the same time you can get your housework done because she'll entertain herself. Even if you're not sitting with her, you can talk to her while you're getting things done.

Enjoy it, this is what you want!
So many moms post questions about clingy, needy, whining kids who seem to need constant attention and someone to "entertain" them around the clock. Your daughter is perfectly healthy and normal. If you REALLY want to play with her just sit down on the floor and play next to her, following along with what she is doing.
Or be like me, stay close, stay tuned in, but read a book, or put on an exercise video, or bake a cake, whatever!

Kids are supposed to entertain themselves. This is normal.

On the floor in a big cardboard box fort.
Once when my son was about 2 we had a big box that was shipped full of packing peanuts.
Once I got my item out, my son dived into the peanuts.
I've got some great pictures.
I can't even remember what came in the package, but we'll always remember those packing peanuts.
These were the corn starch peanuts.
We ended up playing with them on the deck and when we were finished just hosed them down to disintegrate them.
