I keep mine in a fishing tackle box - one with lots of little compartments. Each necklace has its own compartment so they can't get tangled up with each other.
I don't wear my jewelry because it's all lumped together in a giant jewelry box.(I spent 10 minutes untangling last night before a date w/hubby). I am guilty of letting my 3 year old play in the box - which only makes the problem worse! The box didn't work for me before my dd ever got into it.
But still ,I know there's a better solution and many of you incredibly creative & organized moms are already using it. I have mostly costume jewelry, necklaces and earrings.
This was sooo helpful! I'm going to get the hanging see through bag with zipper pouches & necklace holders. Thanks all!

I just recently bought a necklace organizer thingy to hang on the wall from the Container Store, but I haven't transferred all my necklaces to it yet. However, prior to buying it, I would just use a wooden hanger (you know the kind with the pant bar) and I hung the hanger on a bar, or rod, or hook that was inside my closet. It works beautifully actually because the necklaces really can't get too tangled when you are putting them on the pant bar. For necklaces that don't have clasps, I would just drape them over the hanger hook and those would sometimes get a little tangled, but not too bad. Those are actually what prompted me to buy the new wall mounted holder. But, for something inexpensive, the hanger really works;)
i love rachel's suggestion. hubby thought he was being so thoughtful buying me a jewlery holder almost like a tiny chest of drawers with side that open for hanging items and the lid lifts off for earrings. Ihate it. the stuff i have doesn't fit nicely in there and i can't see what i have.
My bright idea was to take model magic and make my own thing to put in the drawer, i basically lmade littel square pinch pots and smooshed them so they would all stick to together as a drawer organizer. that works better for me,
Hi K.,
I hope you can stand one more. I used multi-tiered pants hangers to hang up my necklaces (I don't wear earrings). You can get a lot of necklaces onto each branch, and the hanger takes up mostly vertical space.
When I travel, I lay out my necklaces on a piece of felt and roll it up into a tube. This way, the jewelry is protected, and the chains don't get tangled.
I have a jewelry box now, but a long time ago I cut out a heart from a roll of cork board and hung it on the wall. I bought a box of colorful tacks and stuck them in, and hung my necklaces and bracelets from them. It was great, because I could stick my earrings into it too.
I absolutely love my little 'armoire' looking jewelry box. It has drawers for small things and watches, the bracelets and necklaces hang on hooks and it has a separate ring drawer. When my daughter was between 3-5, I had to keep it locked away in my closet because she had a tendency to want to play in my jewelry and actually lost my wedding ring once! But now that she's almost 6, I proudly display it on my dresser again :)
I have the hanging jewelry holder. I love it because you can see everything and has lots of compartments. I know I've seen real pretty ones at Marshalls.
I keep my jewelry in little silk bags. What I wear all the time is in my purse. What I wear from time to time is in my locked cabinet in the closet. I place it on a high shelf.
My MIL told me about using an embroidery hoop that you can hang. Put a black or white (I much prefer red) piece of material in it. Then you can put your post earrings or pins and see what you have. Also makes a pretty wall decoration up high so kids can't get into them.
I too had a MAJOR problem organizing jewelry. My first attempt at organizing was turning my medicine cabinet into a jewelry box. I took out the metal shelves and used command hooks and hung jewelry from that. However, the hooks wouldn't stay on and usually they are super strong. So next attempt was buying a jewelry stand I saw at a discount store. Not tall enough for my long costume jewelry necklaces. Final solution that has worked... I bought a dress form from Hobby Lobby that looks cute on my dresser. It is about 30 inches tall, is dark brown metal. It has places I can hang bracelets on the top, to areas on the side that I hang all the necklaces, little hooks near the "feet" that I hang my big fun rings, and then I hang my earrings from some swirls in the dress. I can see everything at once. I have a friend who hung shelves with hooks in her closet to hang everything.
you might also want to use a wall mounted tie rack/belt rack for the necklaces. just mount it to a wall in your closet or behind the closet door.
I have a wall in my closet that does not have anything on it and I had my husband put 3 rows of about 10 little hooks right in the wall. I can hang a couple necklaces or bracelets on each one.
I store my earrings in the pill boxes you buy to sort your pills for the week. For bracelets and necklaces I bought one of the jewelry boxes that you hang on the wall. Works great, no more tangled mess.
I have a 'jewelry drawer' which doubles as a junk drawer. I was soooo over it. I found a mannequin bust which now stands in my room... hung all my necklaces on there so it's right out in front of me. I'm attaching wire 'arms' for my bracelets. Because the outside is lined with this felt material, I can stick any earrings right in there that aren't posts. The rest of the earrings and my rings sit in a pretty teacup on top of my microwave ;) Not the BEST solution, but waaaay better than it all being thrown in that stupid drawer!!
I don't have it, but the neatest idea I've seen is a clear plastic organizer that hangs. http://www.nextag.com/hanging-jewelry-organizer/compare-html
It is on my to do list...
for valentine's day my fiance bought me a wonderful jewelry box from walmart. it has places to hang necklaces and bracelets, and put your rings, and then drawers for your earrings. it's really nice, and not that expensive, well worth the money. if you wanna know more about it, i can try to find the link to it to send you, just pm me. it was hte best investment for my jewelry.
if you have a store called Claire's or Icing check it out. I bought a little display rack that holds my earrings & rings. I am able to hang necklaces too.
This rack has 5 rows holds about 8 or 9 pairs per row and has 3 or 4 handle things u could put rings (3-4 rings) or a bunch of necklaces.
They also sell hands with the fingers spread out- u can put rings & necklaces.
