How Do You Go Places When Your Baby Is into EVERYTHING?!!!

We are due to go to my friend's cabin in a few hours and I'm dreading it... My 1 year old daughter is at the stage where she is into EVERYTHING! She crawls all over (super fast), puts every single thing she can find in her mouth, and climbs onto everything like a little monkey! It is seriously going to be exhausting trying to watch her since we will be outside and on the beach most of the day today. I know if I try to put her in a pack n play she will just scream and cry. Any idea for how to get through this day? What should I do to keep my baby out of trouble? At this point I'm thinking it might be easier to cancel, which is sad because it's a beautiful day and I want to see my friend :-( Thanks!

What can I do next?

Dont cancel have you ever been to the beach with her? She might enjoy it and kids tend to act different around other people. Take some sand toys, snacks and i took a old bed sheet with me so the blanket was big but yet light. My son had a blast and it wasnt as bad as i thought.

You will be at the beach? That's easy girl! Lil' kids will spend HOURS playing in the sand, HOURS! Bring scooping toys and you will be fine. If you are truly scared that she is gonna crawl away I would sacrifice the pack n play and dump a mountain of sand in it with her...she will be as happy cas an be. You'll see!

Have fun!

By the time you read my response, I hope you will have already survived the visiting experience. In the future, let your hostess know so they can baby proof (remove all breakables, etc..) before you get there. When you arrive scan the room and just move things up away from your daughter's reach. My husband's stepmom has so many breakables and collectibles, but she is all too happy to baby proof for our arrival.
We just spent a week in a cabin and my son had the most fun getting in and out of the doggy door. He didn't care about the rest of the place, and there were plenty of eyes and arms to help keep him safe and out of trouble.
I hope you had a wonderful day :)

Yes, the beach is great! Yes, she will have fun running in the sand and playing with sand toys.....
She will also have fun trying to eat rocks, sand, feathers, seaweed, clams, trash, and any other thing that she is not supposed to get. I hear you, I feel you, I am living this now. BLEH!!
The only thing that I can say is that I was SURE my daughter would have a big ol' fit when I put her in the pack and play, and sure enough....SHE LOVES IT!!! She goes in there and plays with her toys and then whines to come out and be held. I hold her for a bit, play with her, love on her, and then she wants to go back in the pack and play! HALLELUJIAH!! So, you may 'think' she doesn't want to go in one, but have you tried?! That's my only suggestion and I hope it works!

I had VERY active twins and we would visit a cabin as well as a beach house from 6mos old and on). IMO it's all about containment. we would (with the host's permission) block off an area and baby proof it. Blocking it off can be as easy as couch cushions and/or bringing your own gates. we also found bringing the high chairs and lots of fun hand toys worked well during dinner, etc.

re: the beach - that's the BEST place to have a 1 yo! dig, swim, run... it wears them out! You just have to keep your eyes on them at all times...... but that's nothing new, it's just being a good mom.

I understand what you are going through! The days of lounging on the beach without any cares of the world are gone (for awhile anyway), but she will have fun and what a great experience for her tactile senses. Touching the sand and water will be fun for her. She may try to eat the sand, but it will probably only be one or two times before she decides that is not satisfying. Do you have one of those accordion style yard fences that expand? They are much larger than a pack 'n play that will help keep her designated to a safe expanse of beach that she may not be bothered by. You both will be exhausted by the end or your day, but the upside is you will probably get a good nap out of her too! Good luck!

Well, I wouldn't be bothered if we were going to be outside at the beach, because she's going to play in the sand and water -and that's fun and EXHUAUSTING ;-) After you come in this evening, she'll probably have an early bedtime and you'll be fine!

I do understand your hesitation. My nightmares come when we are going to spend a lot of time in a cabin or condo and not on a beach or something. Mine are older and not so bad now, but I didn't take them everywhere at that age because of those issues -depending on how much I felt like riding herd on them! Look forward to playing with her on the beach though -that should be fun. Just understand with kids, you're not going to have those relaxing, read a book and snooze type beach days!

Oh -and don't worry if she eats some sand. It won't hurt her -my boys have eaten fistfuls!

bravo to her! She's doing what she should be! Roll with & just think about the memories you'll be creating...what an awesome opportunity!

My parents owned a lake house. My sis & I used to take our naps in the bottom of a 60s wooden ChrisCraft speed boat! Our kids took their naps - either on the pontoon or on the river bank. Babies + outdoor experiences = timeless, precious memories! Take the camera.....

We took our kids to stay at a little beach house in Maine when our youngest was 12 months old last summer. It was a bit tiring inside bc she wanted to get into things she should not and climb the stairs. What we did was take turns watching her (most of the adults took a turn helping out). Outside was great though. She was so happy to play play play in the sand. She did eat a bit but she learned it was gross. We gave her some cups to scoop with and she was happy as a clam for hours! Someone did need to be by her side at all times in case she decided to go down to the water but it wasn't really a burden. It was nice to sit out on the beach and another adult or her dad would take turns too.
