a Wagon. we have the step 2 radio flyer one. in the bottom there are some drain holes. there is one in the center - it fits an umbrella pole in there. we did that with both my kids.... 1 kept them off the sand - and the eating of sand to a minimum - kept them in the shade. put a bucket of water in there for them to splash around in. also provide a place that she can stand up on the outside and still hold on to the side to walk around (both my kids were standing and starting to furniture walk at 8 mos, and full walking by 10 mos - so they loved to be able to walk around the outside of the wagon too.

We brought twin 8 month olds last year and did well with snacks, buckets and shovels. Sun hats, a queen sized bed sheet to sit on. Umbrellas didn't work as they pulled up on them to stand. Sand got eaten, several face plants into sand, lots of soggy crakers, but they were happy. Pack n plays, and wagons did not work for mine as they were not content to be contained. The sun made them really tired so they took 2 long naps back at the house. I always envy the parents whose babies/toddlers sleep at the beach!

Took my son last year when he was 7 months old with his older sister. We took him, her, towels, sand buckets, sun block, hats, and a water float with a cover. We spent most of our time playing in the water, (we had on sunblock, as did he, and, we had his cover). After we played in the water about an hour or so, we made a sand castle, and, we were all ready to go. :) We had water to rinse off with before loading up. (We went to a public beach, no showers.) Nobody got sunburned, and, even though it was short, my daughter still talks about how much fun she had! And, we got some great pictures.

A tent for the beach.
Just do a search like on Amazon for "beach tent."

A baby can get real sunburned real fast.
Bring sand toys, a bucket, scoopers, even just plastic bowls/cups from your house. Simple.
Lots of water, or nursing apron if you are nursing... sunblock for babies, change of clothes.

If you/he are under the beach tent you won't have to worry about getting burned.

If you don't have a beach tent... then I would NOT stay at the beach for a long time. A person, can get sunburned even in 15 minutes in the sun.
I would recommend going in the morning... when the sun is not so direct and overhead.
