If it is a team meeting to determine eligibility for an IEP then the Special Ed advocate is someone you would find by word of mouth. Even if you do not find one in time, be aware that you do not have to sign anything in the IEP meeting. If they do not find your child eligible, they will try to make you sign a document to that effect. Just say you want to think over all the info and not sign anything if they ask. I would contact your community's Special Education group if one exists. It all depends on what this meeting really is. A child study meeting does not give enough info.

Are you talking about at school? You could call around your area for psychologists who treat children and places that treat special needs.
If you can't find anyone, you could ask the school district to send an employee from the central office.

In NY there is always a parent advocate there. It this is your first meeting, that should be fine. If problems arise for some reason, then you can find someone. I never had to in the 15 years I dealt with this situation.

PM me with the general area or the zip code and I can help you research Centers for Independent Living that would have free services where they have advocates on staff that can help with various functions. Is this for a situation with a PPT and IEP? A 504? What's the age range?

I would contact a local, reputable foster family agency or family services agency. They usually have family advocates. They may not be able to provide you with their advocates, but may be able to point you in the right direction.

I don't know what a child study is. Is your child going to take part in some sort of study for an illness?
