I read your question a couple of hours ago (before you deleted it), and I've been thinking about it. It bothers be that your childcare provider would think that your son is doing anything that isn't completely age appropriate. I wonder if your provider lacks knowledge of age appropriate expectations.
Our youngest began going to a daycare center (not in-home care) when he was 2 1/2. They have children in different rooms according to age, so all the toys are very age appropriate. Another definite advantage is that if a teacher has to call in sick, there will be a sub or the director will step in. You will not get a phone call saying that childcare is not available that day.
Two year olds don't play with other kids. They just don't. If anything, they play near other kids. I don't think your provider knows what is appropriate for 2 year olds.
