How Do I Fix My Computer Who I Understand Was Turned into a "Robot"?

A person (persons) is using my email address to send junk emails to everybody I ever emailed on my computer. I am getting nasty emails from people who are very unhappy with me, and do not know what to do. I ran an AVG (built-in) anti-virus program, and the problem did not stop. I am worried about the type of materials that are being sent out using my email address, and they are even using it to advertise items for sale on Craig's list. I had placed some ads on the internet, and someone got a hold of my email address. I do not have any extra money to hire a tech, but might have to charge it and I am beyond upset. Is there anybody out there who is familiar with this situation? I just learned a new word this week "bot", and never heard of it before now.

What can I do next?

I would say get spybot and run that. Also change your email. It is a slight problem sine you ahve to contact all your contacts and change it, but it's well worth it Then all your contacts can set your current one now, as spam and they dont' have to see it.

Also a safety IF you post anywhere on line and you want to put your email in their, type it as "name at domain.com" a bot can not recognize that format but they recognize "____@____.com" .

definitely start with changing your password then i would recommend the Ad-Aware as Ben said. We use that all the time, there is a free time with it but a lifetime subscription to it is not at all expensive. Should take care of it..

Contact the provider for your email address. For example, if it's a yahoo account, contact yahoo. They will be able to help you. You may need to cancel your account and open a new one.

Also, change your password. Sometimes you go to a fake login screen and you put in your username and password thinking it's the real screen. Then the "bad people" have your email address and password. Start with changing your password, but do contact your provider. Immediately.

Whoever is doing this has your password. You need to change your password immediately. Make it a very hard password with letters, numbers and special characters (@, $ %, etc.) and make it a long password (more than 7 characters/letters/numbers). Also, if you visit places like FB and Myspace or twitter, change your passwords there as well and always make sure you are on the legitimate website by actually typing the name of the site you are visiting in a new browser window.

Change ALL your passwords. ALL OF THEM. Make sure they are all something different. Never ever use the same password for your email and your bank.
Down load spybot search and destroy. I believe a PP gave you the link. It will take you awhile to run it the first time. Make sure that you turn off your screen saver. If it kicks on, it will stall the scanning process. That should catch the virus. If that doesn't catch it, you may have to deactivate your email. However, I don't know if that will even get rid of it.
In the meantime, I would contact your friends and family and let them know that you are aware of the problem and are trying to fix it.

I don't know how to fix it, but when you run ads on Craigslist, don't list your email account. They can contact you via Craigslist.

That is why a lot of websites use a form for you to complete when you want to email them. If they simply list an email address, the bots can nab the email address and use it.

You most likely have a virus. And unless you know what you're doing, it's worth spending the money to have someone check it out. It isn't always as simple as removing it because it may have installed other problem programs and you could be in for a world of hurt. The one thing you could do, but I don't even recommend it unless you know what you're doing is to reformat your machine. But then you will have to re-install every program that you use, and that would mean having all the discs at hand. Just be careful of friends that "know" how to fix it, they could make it worse. Sometimes it's worth paying a professional.
