Not going to happen, it is her stage of development to do this, it is necessary for her. It is how she is experiencing the world. It will pass, this is why all the experts tell parents to baby proof their homes. You need to put everything that is small enough to slide through a toilet paper roll tube. If it will go in that it can get in her mouth and she can get it stuck in her throat and choke. This usally stops before age 3 but can continue even after that age.

time
this is what she does now, it'll last about another year or under and then she should "grow out of it". my little guy was the same and now is almost 2.5 years old and i think he's almost done eating everything.

Just keep telling her "no, no" or "stop" and take it away from her. Babies naturally put things in their mouth. That's how they learn. They see something, they want to touch it, shake it, drop it, and yes, taste it. They want to wrap all of their senses around it. She'll grow out of it

Very common at that age. You just need to be careful that there are not small objects/toys within her reach that she could choke on. She will eventually grow out of it.

Just a quick warning... please be careful of where you set your pocketbook down. Mine was set down for just a few moments on a sofa table (but I didn't realize the strap was hanging down over the edge) and my daughter pulled it down. Of course, everything dumped out on the floor, and before I could get to her she already had a handful of change in her mouth!
Fortunately for me, she spit it all out in my hand when I asked her to, but it might not have been a happy outcome.

This is a stage, so be aware of EVERYTHING that is within her reach, or even her ability to pull something to her that is seemingly OUT of her reach...

Putting things in their mouth is how babies explore. There is no way to get her to stop because it is the natural thing for her to do. Just like we explore things with our eyes and hands, babies do this with their mouth. She will outgrow it eventually. Just keep dangerous (small, sharp) out of her reach, and make sure your floors and all her toys are clean.

I wouldn't endorse the hot sauce method!
That's what 18 month olds do.
You need to be hyper-vigilant about what she can and can't get to.
Also make sure she has safe toys to chew on at all times.

It's normal and you can't stop it and yes babyproofing is the key. One safety suggestion: it's very hard to keep a house 100% clear of small objects below waist level, so containing the baby might be a good strategy. If you don't have a playpen, consider getting one like the North States metal play yard, a set comes with 6 panels including a gate, it's free-standing and super sturdy. If you think the house is full of hazards put her in there when you can't watch her every move. She might scream at being penned up but it least it would buy you time to clean up and organize. Better screaming than choking. Put all the best toys in it.
These are available on Amazon and while they are expensive they can be resold, they can't be stained or broken. Also great for dogs/new puppies.

Make sure everything you want safe is out of reach. My 18 month old puts everything in her mouth as well and I just had to super proof our house! Plus I had to make sure that things on the dinning table were cleared off, from my purse to daddy's keys and silverwear bc she knows how to climb on things. Just keep the harmful things away and keep plenty of toys around! Good luck =)

Hello B.,

Babies and toddlers actually learn throught chewing and putting things in her mouth. It's a natural instinct, which you cannot stop until she has developmentally moved through that stage.

I strongly suggest you "baby proof" very well. It's recommended that anything which can fit through a toilet paper tube be removed from the baby's areas. If it can fit through a toilet paper tube, then it's a choking hazard.

Good Luck,

R. Magby

when my son had or has something in his hand that I don't want him to have or to be able to put in his mouth I just hold out my hand and say thank you then wait till he gives it to me. It took about a week but we didn't fight over stuff and I just had to watch him but eventually he figured out which things I was going to ask for then would being them to me automatically rather than playing with them or putting them in his mouth

Um, OUCH! I would not put hot sauce on something, that is horrible. It could burn her skin or eyes as well as her mouth. Hot sauce can cause actual burns, not just "stings".

This is normal. Not a whole lot of fun, but it is the way they learn about the world. It will pass, you just have to stay on top of her for a little while longer to make sure it isn't anything dangerous. Babies put everything in thier mouths to learn about them with an additional sense besides just sight or feel or sound. She should be growing out of it soon, my son had pretty much outgrown it by this age.

My youngest son is the same age and does the same exact thing. Just be vigilant and remove objects that she sneaks in. I can tell when my son has something in his mouth, and he is getting good at opening up when I tell him too. He put EVERYTHING he can fit in - from dog hair to toys that shouldn't even fit. He's a bugger. Just be watchful. Eventually it will stop, I hope!

Sorry, but nothing. You let her explore and you watch her at all times. There is no way around it since that is what babies do (need to do). The onus is on you to make sure she is in a safe place at all times. In a couple of years it will get easier and then there will be other things to worry about.

Sorry.
