I always make a gift basket of a spagetti dinner...box of noodles, jar of sauce, garlic seasoning, maybe a bottle of wine to go with it. It's always cute and a big hit.
Hi
My family was invited to a housewarming/halloween party on saturday for my husbands coworker/friend. I have never personally meet the family hosting the party. so I am wondering what do you give for a housewarming gift? how much is usually spent on this type of gift.

I would get like a jar of candy or vase of flowers or something of that sourt. If all else fails just give them a card that say's you were thinking about them. Or if you wanted to get something like a blanket, dishes, or decrative piece that'd be something bigger.... :)
We just bought our first house and I've got to say... the BEST gift we got was gift cards to Lowes or Home Depot!!! With a new home comes unexpected expenses as well as landscaping wants/desires.... what could be better than a gift card to a home improvement store??
Go to TJ Maxx (or somewhere similar) and purchase a "seasonal" platter- something fall or Thanksgiving themed load it up with baked goods or an appetizer. Add a little note indicating that the platter and the goodies are for them to keep with best wishes for many years of happy entertaining! You can do all of the above for under $20.
My mom does this and I have adopted it too!
I always give windchimes as a gift.
I would go to Bath & Body Works and get different scented hand soaps. (Our family loves the foam pumps!) They can even wrap them in a cellophane bag with a bow for you. It is a great gift because it will be used and it is inexpensive.
Another inexpensive and nice gift is to bake cookies and then put them on a decorative plate (could be Halloween themed). They get to eat the cookies and then keep the plate.
I love purchasing Welcome mats for the house.. They have beautiful ones at TJ MAXX, Target,, etc.. If they already have one on their front porch, they can use it on the back or side door..
I roll them up and tie and over the top bow on it..
when we bought our first house a friend brought some plants as housewarming gifts. they were planted and come up every year in the yard. i loved them.
Bottle of wine always works.
You can get a nice bottle of wine for $10-20
A welcome mat is a great idea! Roll it up and put a big bow on it. Or go to Things Remembered and get a monogrammed door knocker/doorbell thing. Hand soaps. An elephant state with the trunk UP is good luck in a house. Or a bottle of wine with a card is always appropriate. It's not the cost--it's the thought!
I'd go the gift card route since you don't know them very well and don't know their tastes. Something like Lowe's or Home Depot could always be used, or a place with home decorations like Gordman's, or even Ross and Burlington Coat Factory have home decorating sections. Since you don't know them very well I wouldn't make it huge; $15 or $20 would be a very nice gift to receive from someone you barely know.
Or you could go the traditional route; bring a bottle of wine and a round loaf of bakery bread.
OR, since you said your whole family was invited, maybe making something for them and getting the kids involved would be an opportunity to teach your kids about giving/appreciation/social etiquette. I'm thinking out loud here, but depending on their age(s), you could make something in the kitchen, or a simple decoration for their house, or have the whole family make and sign a card. Then you could put a gift card in it or not, as you wish. Or ask your kid(s) if they have any ideas.
This time of year a Yankee scented candle would be amazing. Pick a scent like cinnamon roll or sugar cookies. Another option is Glade scented plug-ins. It makes any house owner fell at home to see the romance and flicker of flame and smell the aromas of there last home!
When it comes to decorating a home some people have certain taste so you don't want to get anything too permanent. I like the seasonal platter or something like that. You could also do a movie night thing with a popcorn bowl or fun popcorn popper, popcorn, candy and a Blockbuster gift card/movie.
