Hotflashes!

I am curious if there are other mothers that are going through the same situation that I am and any solutions... I have been having the worst hot flashes since my son was born 8 months ago. My doctor has given me a good check up and said that my hormone levels are fine, no tyroid issues, etc, and that he sees no reason for my hot flashes, I almost felt like he thought I was exaggerating. They are so bad that I have to take a cold shower in the morning or by the time I dry off I am caked in sweat. I don't wear a jacket and I've been wearing open toe shoes in our coldest of days because if I don't I am dying from the hot flashes. My poor husband has to use a space heater in our bedroom because I have to close the vents or I burn up during the night when a hot flash comes on. I have been told that even though I check out fine, it will take up to a year for my body to adjust. Does anyone please know if these awful hot flashes will stop one day??? I miss wearing my sweaters in the winter! At 27 years old, I now know how uncomfortable my mother has always been when she says she's having a hotflash! Added notes: I only breastfed for 6 weeks, and I'm currently on orthotricyclen BC pills, the same ones I was on before getting pregnant.

What can I do next?

I actually had the same problem after having my son three years ago...My doctor had me change my birth control pills. I had to go through a few before my hormones would level out...Ask your doctor about Yasmin..

If you are breastfeeding this is normal. A nursing mother's hormones are like those of a woman going through menopause. This means you get all the lovely symptoms like dryness, shorter or no periods, hot flashes, etc. My OB/GYN was very supportive of me when I was going through all of this. Don't worry it will subside in the next few months when he starts more solids and starts getting more fluids from a cup.

If you're not nursing, get a second opinion.

I did have hotflashes for about a month or so after I had to wean my son from nursing(also born May 2006!!). It wasn't till I got off the mini pill and regular BC that they went away, but my periods have been way out of wack way since I had him!! Even on BCP it still comes when ever it wants to regardless where I'm at in my pack!! I talked to my OB about it and she said it was normal as it takes our bodies time to readjust and get back on track. I've been throgh all the hormone and thyroid tests too and nothing came out of it. I was 25 when I had my daughter and everything seemed to pick up right where it had left off. Now I had my son at 31 and still 8 months later I'm not back to normal!!! I don't get it!! Are you still nursing him or on BCP or any other kind of hormone birth control? Just wondering cause those could be some facters for you.

Hope you cool off soon:)
S.

Hi Kim,
Hang in there. they will go away. I got them as well with my first babe. They lasted a few months and gone. I always figured out it was my hormones readjusting. My hair fell out too! now, that really tripped me out. But then it all grew back in.
Enjoy yourselves with little babe,
Mar

Hi K. -- I remember being really hot during the few weeks after I had my baby, especially at night. I have read that this is normal..something to do with your body flushing out all the extra fluid from pregnancy in the form of sweat. Maybe what you are experiencing is related to the same type of hormonal changes? I'm not sure. Sorry that's not too much help... but I hope you are able to get some relief soon! My daughter was also born in May 2006 - on the 12th - so she is the same age as your son! What was his birthday? Good luck to you...

K.,
I feel your discomfort! I too am in my late twenties and have had hotflashes since the birth of my daughter 3 years ago. I wear open toe shoes, still and people think I'm crazy. My docs have also checked my hormones, thyroid, you name it. I wish I had some advice to share, but hopefully it helps knowing that someone else is in the same boat. Let's hope there's at least one other person out there that can give some helpful advice on this subject. Stay cool ;)

My friend and I have both went through this, it is strange. Our children are in K and first grade and we still experience this. Before kids, I was always cold and now I get these hot flashes, still. Don't know what it is but I am healthy. I usually dress in layers in the winter so I can peel off.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Your body changes drastically in every way, shape, and form, after giving birth.
