M.L.
Dessert, flowers, a nice potted plant.... we usually make a homemade salsa and chips for an appetizer, or a plate of cookies or brownies. We nor any of my friend s drink, so we wouldn't accept the wine.
Our next door neighbors just invited us over for dinner tomorrow. They are retired and around my parents age. They have kids in the area, some of whom will be there tomorrow with their spouses/kids. My husband asked if we could bring anything & was told, "just yourselves".
I'd like to bring some sort of host/hostess gift, other than a bottle of wine.
Any ideas?

i like the flowers idea. if you bring food it might annoy them especially since you are invited to a dinner.
if you were invited to a flower expo at their house i would not tell you to bring flowers, but maybe a nice treat to share, hahaha. see what i mean?
A dessert bread - pumpkin, banana (no nuts), struessel
What if they don't drink? They might be offended. I would take dessert or flowers. Or you can go another route and take a thank you card that says thanks for dinner and great company. We really appreciate it! Then in a day or two take desserts or something.
Flowers
Box of chocolates (like See's)

Potted flower plant
Cute cement stepping stone (my fave...saw a heart one my friend had)
Mini waterfall, small, cute. Not inexpensive
Basket of things: wine, cheese, crackers.

Cute garden statue (on sale now. things like: gnome, snail, engraved rock, pretty rock, mini water fountain, gardening tools etc! (these are my faves)
Edibles are always good. How about a flavored olive oil or balsamic vinegar to spruce up your cooking, baking, salads or even desserts? You can get them at boutiques for $15 each in Wheaton and downtown Naperville. Enjoy!
I usually will bring a small bunch of flowers, a small herb plant that can be used for cooking or a small fruit basket that I can put together. I almost never give wine, desserts, scented anything. People these days, unless you know them well can have problems with, allergies to, wanted to lose weight. The items I mentioned can be used in many ways and either easily disposed of or cared for without much ado. The other thing I have gotten for those I know who enjoy music is an itunes card so they can download a few songs of choice. I usually will put something like this in a small note card with a note of thanks for their invitaion and with written thank you's lacking these days this can be appreciated.
Candle or something with there last name initial on it...or perhaps a picture frame?
Take some fruit or a nice fruit dish. Fruit is almost always welcome when invited to a meal. Or you could take her a small basket of a few small kitchen gadgets, or a few tied together like a bouquet. Another idea is one of those crafty everything you need to make brownies all in one container. http://christmas.organizedhome.com/gifts-crafts-gift-tags...
Good Luck
What about flowers?
