I will be delivering my second child in April, and we are new to the area. Does anyone have any advice for a hospital to use? Our choices through our dr. and insurance are St. Joseph, Sherman and St. Alexius. Thought maybe some of you out there might have some insight for me. I am really looking for a nice nursing staff and I would really like to have single room! (don't we all)!
TIA!

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

I had all three of my kids at St. Alexius - and loved it each time!! The nurses were fabulous, and the staff was very caring and treated me wonderfully! I lived close to St. Alexius for my 1st child, and but we moved before my 2nd and 3rd - so St. Alexius is about a 45 minute drive for me. It was worth the drive! In any case, I had a private room with my 1st 2 kids, but for my 3rd, the Mom/Baby unit was packed, so I did have to share a room for about 12 hours until they cleared out more space in another room...but again, I had the room to myself (and my baby and husband) for most of my stay! Hope this helps, and congrats on your upcoming arrival! J. :-)

I had a baby at St. Alexius 5.5 yrs ago and will be going back there in Aug for my 4th baby.. Every hospital has its good and bads. I work for a hospital in the area Central Dupage, and they are good too, but my doc is not there.. Take a tour of all 3 and see which you are more comf. with..Good Luck..

I had my son at Sherman almost 3 years ago and I was very happy with the care we received. He was in the NICU for a few days and everyone there was so nice. I was also in the mat ward for over a week with preterm labor so I got to know the staff pretty well.

The only complaints I had was that the NICU was on a different floor from MOther/Baby and I was breastfeeding, so in order to feed him I had to wait for a nurse to come get me and take me up in a wheelchair. And they had no comfy chairs for me to sit and nurse him in there, which I needed cause I was very sore. Lactation Consultants weren't so great, kept coming by when I was by myself and not when I was feeding him and I really needed the help.

Also they were full at the time so I had to have a semi private room, which wasn't a huge deal since no one else was there, but with the two beds the room is very small if you have visitors. The staff was wonderful there though. I haven't been to any other hospital so I can't say if I would go somewhere else or not.

I had both my children at St. Alexius. Both times I had a private room, but they do have double rooms for times when they are really busy. Both times I really liked my nurses in L&D. Also, both times I liked most of the nurses in recovery, but each time there was one nurse I wasn't too thrilled about (different each time.) The food was really, really bad, but I suppose hospital food is always bad. Your best bet is to have someone bring you food or just eat things like cereal or crackers, lol. So, I'm not making St. Alexius sound too great, I guess. Overall it was a good experience, though. Like I said, the room was private, I liked most of the staff. They have wonderful lactation consultants, if you plan on breastfeeding. You can always go on a tour of the maternity ward. They also have different classes you can take to prepare. Hopefully you'll get some more advice! Congratulations and Good Luck!

I had both of my daughters at St. Jos's in Elgin. The first was 3 years ago and the second was 8 months ago. I was extremely impressed and happy with the care I received. My second daughter was in the NICU for 10 days and the nurses were wonderful. I found all of the staff to be kind, courteous and respectful. I was fortunate enough to have a private room for both of my visits. This may have been because I had a C Section both times. I would highly recommend this hospital and the staff for your delivery. Good luck.

I had outpatient surgery at Sherman a couple months ago and found it to be about as pleasant an experience as surgery can be. The hospital seemed like a good facility and the nurses were really nice. My surgeon said Sherman is a better hospital than St Joseph, especially for inpatient, but I don't know specifics about the maternity ward in either place. And I don't know anything about St. Alexius except that our pediatrician said they have the best pediatrics ICU in the Fox Valley area.

Good luck!
