Hoping Someone Can Help Me

My son is 6 months old and is currently breastfed (no solids). Normally, he is asleep by 630 every night (early because he is exhausted). The "fun" begins @830/9 when he wakes up screaming in pain with horrible SMELLY gas. My husband or I walk him around the room until he feels better. Then we try to it him down and the screaming starts again. Sometimes we are lucky and he stays asleep, but usually, he is up 30 minutes again with gas and screaming. This goes on well until early the next morning. He does have reflux and is medicated but this has been going on for at least a month. I give him gripe water and burp him before putting him down, but nothing seems to work. He is exhausted, my husband and I are exhausted, and even my three old is waking. Please help!

Have you done an elimination diet?

Both my babies were sensitive to dairy in my diet. So, if I ate any dairy, they were completely miserable with gas. So try cutting dairy out of your diet - it takes 3 weeks for it all to clear out of your system, so don't expect immediate effects.

The other big 2, in addition to dairy, are nuts and soy. If you don't get relief by cutting out dairy, then cut out nuts, then soy, and see if it gets better.

The other possibility is that he has outgrown his current dose of reflux meds. If he's had a growth spurt lately, that could easily be true. Remember that in a 15 lb baby, gaining 1.5 pounds is an increase in 10% of his size, and may mean that his dose needs adjusted. Talk to your ped about this.

Have you tried gas drops? I had to use those like crazy with both my boys.

It could be lots of things, but you may need to do an elimination diet on yourself to find the culprit. My daughter had a sensitivity to dairy until she was 2 years old that sounds exactly like your son. Try eliminating all dairy, but that is very hard to do as dairy lurks in a lot of things. You need to read labels carefully. We had to eliminate all dairy even the slightest amount would set her off.

My guess is it's something you are eating. If he is exclusively breast fed, I would monitor/modify your diet. Something you are eating is upsetting his tummy. My SIL went through something similar with all three of her children. She lost several hours of sleep with the first two kids. When number three came along, she was determined to find the cause. And although she loves and trusts her pediatrician, she was no help in the matter. My SIL sat down and googled the symptoms. When she cut out dairy, the fussiness subsided quite a bit. When she cut out dairy and soy, her baby changed almost completely. With my daughter, if I ate anything spicy, it was going to be a long night. With my son, I couldn't eat citrus.

ETA...My SIL's son was also diagnosed with reflux (well, all three of her children were). When she changed her diet, her son no longer needed those meds).

Oh my, that is no fun! I am going to PM you a suggestion for YOU to eat to help your son. Your son is what you eat...so you want to feed yourself the best.
I won't post it here because I think it is really important that you get the info and sometimes they remove posts with links.

You didn't mention if you'd changed your diet. It is possible something you eat is causing his problem. Is there something you started eating or are eating more of in the past month?

Some common possibilities include dairy, caffeine, gas-producing veggies, nuts and citrus.

Do you eat a lot of veggies? Broccoli, Cauliflower, Asparagus? Those veggies are very gassy!!

Has this been happening since he was born or is it new? If it's new - have you changed your diet? If you have changed your diet - even your routine - started exercising a little more arduous? Then that changes your milk as well.

Do a food journal for you - journal what you eat and how it affects your son. It could help a LOT if you know that what you are eating is affecting your son.

If you are eating a lot of veggies...back off the veggies for a week and see if that makes a difference. But STILL KEEP A FOOD JOURNAL...caffeine will affect this as well ...if you are drinking more coffee or soda...it will affect him as well.

Start cutting out high allergen foods. It's more than likely a sensitivity to something in your diet. Start with dairy/eggs/nuts. If you don't notice an improvement in a few days, cut out wheat. It can take some time to pinpoint the allergen, so don't get ahead of yourself.
