Holy Produce Explosion

I just picked two baskets of assorted veggies from my garden. I am going to bring them into work tomorrow. I just don't have the time to pick anymore but there is still a lot.

Does anyone have any idea how I can match pickers with produce short of letting random strangers in my back yard?

I hate letting it rot on the vine when I am sure there are people who would want them.....

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys. I am trying to think of anyone who has the time to come over. Hum my ThirtyOne lady has to come by, maybe she will take tomatoes for product.

How lucky is my office I am making a huge tomato mozzarella salad to take into work tomorrow. :)

I found someone to come pick!

What is funny is for the longest time all we got were Juliet tomatoes. Not a bad thing mind you they make an amazing Caprese salad.

If it were me, I would just email my local friends, tell them what I had and if they were interested, they could come over and pick whatever they wanted. My mom also has a neighbor that picks things and puts them in boxes in front of the house that says "free oranges" or whatever, they are always gone. I'm jealous, we grow cactus here in the desert! =)

I'd almost be willing to drive from KC if I had a chunk of time in the next few days. I agree that it would be a shame to let it rot on the vine.

Good Luck.

I would let your two young kids set up a little enterprise for themselves. Whatever they pick they can sell. Kind of like a lemonade stand, except they would have a produce stand out front.

You could put an ad on freecycle and choose one or two specific strangers. Or see if the food pantry or church could send a couple of volunteers over to do the picking.

I love the idea of having the kids help pick and set up a veggie stand in the front yard. They could buy a treat with the money they raise.

Or just try to make the time and pick...and bring a basket or 2 to a local women's shelter. One thing foodwise so many shelters are lacking is fresh produce. They have the canned and boxed goods covered.

Then take as many veggies as you can and roast them in your oven. No oil, baking sheet at 400 until soft. Peel skins off and puree - freeze so that you can add to your kids' food (orange squash into homemade pizza sauce, acorn squash into mac & cheese, green beans into lasagna, tomatoes just bag appropriate portions for pasta/pizza sauces).

Lastly find out if your neighborhood has a blog...if so, post that neighbors can shoot you an email if they want to come and pick!

I would go to the local Farmer's Market with my loot, J.....I don't know if you need a license or not - so instead of letting it go to waste, have the kids pick the produce and take it to sell at your farmers market.

I would LOVE to come over and pick some myself - however, I think it would take me about 2 days to get there and my parents don't have their motorhome there! I'd have to shack up with you!!! :)

Is it possible that you can ask your neighbors what they want or need?

Lisa's idea sounds splendid! I'd pull over to pay $0.50 for some home-grown veggies from some cutie-patootie kids.
