My son is almost 3 and he will hold his pee for upo to 8 hours on a regular basis. Hes been potty trained for 6 mos now and we ask him thru the day if he has to go . He always says NO. Once in a while he will go on his own accord, but not daily. So, I let him hold it in...is this bad for his bladdder?

What can I do next?

I've noticed with the guys I've been in relationships with now these are men but they only pee like once or twice a day I swear. We will be out and about I'll always have to use the restroom every few hours nope not the guys I date. Maybe boys can do this or something.

Not using the toilet can lead to severe bladder and kidney problems. You need to take him to his pediatrician and find out what's going on. Is this simply behavioral, or is there a medical reason behind it? Get it taken care of as soon as possible!

It is also hard on the heart. You may want to make sure there isn't a physical reason for him holding it. If you talk with a pediatrictian they can rule out physical problems and many times they have ideas on emotional reasons. But it doesn't sound good to hold it that long.

Hi there. I had this same problem with my little girl and I know that it can cause some issues. Some of the issues that we ran across are... chronic UTI's, having to do potty training all over again and finally a doctor referred her to a urologist and they ran some test regarding the chronic infections and we found out that it also caused an abnormality in the urithera commonly called a spinning top. This abonormality had been causing her to urinate with such force and pressure that some of the urine would go back up into her bladder and kidneys causing the infections. It can also cause incontinance(the inability to stop accidents). She has been on meds for over a year now as we are all hoping that the abnormality will resolve itself otherwise she will require surgery because these problems can cause kidney failure later in life. Besides the meds the urologist suggested having her sit on the toilet backwards to relieve some of the pressure as well as having her go to the bathroom a minimum of every 2 hours. I am not trying to scare you or be harsh about the issue, however I do feel that you need to be aware of the things that can happen as a result of this. Please get ahold of your childs doctor and get this taken care of as soon as possible. I know what she had to go through with all the testing and such and it is not easy on the parents either. I would really hate for anyone to have to watch what they have to do the the child for the testing. If you would have to go through the testing for this I would strongly suggest taking the advantage of the option of having the child sudated as it involves a cathiter being inserted as well as x-rays. I hope things work out so that you or anyone that has the same issue doesn't have to go through it all. The doctor told me that it is a common problem in bright children that really get into what they are doing.

Holding it for that long can lead to severe kidney problems. Does he drink enough liquids? My son can barely go 20 minutes w/o having to pee---it was fun trying to potty train him. How long has he been doing this? You may want to consult your pediatrician for ways to resolve it.

My son is the same way. He is four years old and can hold it up to eight hours. Most often he goes every four hours or so, but sometimes he waits longer. He never has an accident and he goes when he truly feels he needs to. I always have to coax him to go before bed, just for my own peace of mind I make him go before bed. He has not had any medical problems, but now after reading the other responses, maybe I will consult his physician. He is a very healthy, active little boy. Has anyone had the same thing and can offer up advice as to what a physican actually said? I think some of the responses sound harsh. Best advice: ask the doctor, and I think I will do the same.
