Hip-Hop Groups with Appropriate Lyrics

My son loves hip-hop music. I've been listening to the radio station he likes and to some of the lyrics. So far, I'm really not impressed with the lyrics. Most of the songs seem to reference sex. Not that this is unusual with music in general. I just don't think that some of the references are really appropriate/healthy for a 12 year old.

Since this is a genre in which I am not well versed, I am looking for recommendations on hip-hop groups with appropriate, clean lyrics so I can load up my iPod with songs that will be enjoyable for both of us. Any recommendations? Christian hip-hop groups that do it well would be great, as well.

What can I do next?

I agree with the Will Smith rec, but I would also go with his old stuff as "DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince".
He might also like Young MC. A lot of the old hip hop is aimed at being humorous rather than sexy like today's stuff.

A great place to hear some artists is at www.pandora.com. Create a station called Classic hip Hop and it will pull a lot of the old stuff from the 80s/early 90s.

Good luck!

I would recommend all of Will Smith's music. He is more mainstream, but his lyrics are all family friendly. He promised his grandmother that his music would be stuff she could listen to. And he has kept that promise. Will Smith is perfect for a 12 year old.

Do you really mean Hip Hop or are you using that as an umbrella term? Rap, Hip-Hop, and R&B are very different genres.
Will Smith is a good option. There is also Take 6, Boys II Men (for the most part, Arrested development (eventhough it's old school), Gods Property (I would recomend the "Stomp" CD, New Edition/Bel Biv Devoe but he might think it's kinda lame 'cause they're from the 80's and kinda hokey, but I like it :)) Black Eye Pt eas-Monkey Business Fugees, The Roots, Mos Def are political, but not nasty. It's kind of hard to give you a good list if I don't know what genre you are talking about. If you can be more specific I can give you a more comprehensive list.

try Lupe Fiasco, Murs, Common, The Foreign Exchange, Living Legends, Aesop Rock...these are more underground hip hop artists & are not commonly on the radio but bring different subjects to their lyrics.
