My 3 yo swallowed a battery last night. It looks to be the size of a battery you put in a watch. He got it yesterday from his flashlight he got from the dentist. He came and told me right away. And then sleeping on it, I'm not sure if I should suggest this to the doctor or not? I have no idea what the battery is made of, I'll have do research. Should I make a call to the peds, or wait and see if somehow it comes out. I've never had this happen with any of my other children. And this isn't the first thing he's swallowed. We've all once swallowed a dime before right? At least I have and my cousins have. And we are fine. But a battery?? I'm beginning to question it. Thanks mamas for your input.
I'd go to the ERimmediately... if his stomach acid erodes the outside of the battery, that's battery acid in his stomach, and it's going to eat right through all his soft tissue.
I'm not a worrier or an over-reactor, but I'm telling you, go to the ER RIGHT NOW!!

Not something you should be asking strangers on a forum. Take him to the ER.
Take him to the doctor/ER right away. I've always been told that the only two dangerous things swallowed are batteries and magnets. You will be seen RIGHT AWAY in an ER if you tell them he swallowed a battery!!! Best wishes - keep us updated!

Take him to the ER. Let them know that he swallowed a battery.
It could be that everything will be fine. Or NOT. The mixture of his stomach acid and the coating of the battery will disintegrate and the battery will leak into his tiny system.

Those batteries are known to cause fatalities because of the nickel, mercury, lithium or cadmium in them. It is poisonous, they can cause intestinal burns and bleeding, and emergency surgery to remove these is often the remedy. Don't fool around, time is of the essence. You don't want this in his system...or to wait for it to pass.

Definitely take him to the ER. Batteries can erode the tissue inside and cause major damage. Good luck!

I would take him to the doctor. Have them XRAY him to find out where it is in his system. IF it leaks acid - it can be VERY bad for your son.

Well if it manages to quickly run its course you are fine. If it doesn't it leaks acid, not something you want inside someone you love!
You need to call your doctor!!

Big difference between a dime and a battery. You had better call the ER - batteries contain acid that could melt his intestines. Really - get on the phone now.

Batteries are very dangerous to swallow, they are really toxic, a dime is not. I would seek Doctor's advice on what you should do now.

I would take him to the Dr- I once had an instance where I thought my dog ate a battery. when I called the vet, they said if i even "thought" he ate a battery he needed to go to the doggy emergency clinic. i'm assuming same thing for a child.

I was to suggest to take him to the ER since my mom told me how dangerous batteries are, no even close to a dime.
I saw you already did that so I am just asking to give us an update when you can.
Sorry for the little guy, probably not fun experience =*(
Take care and lets us know what happen.

He may be okay, but I wouldn't chance it. The battery could leak or even get stuck. Take him to the doctor.

I'm glad you took him right away--this can be very dangerous, I believe. Hope it's all OK.
(Magnets are another thing that's very harmful, if swallowed.)

Get him to the hospital. A boy died from one of those batteries a few years back. It wreaked havoc for 3 weeks, making him sick and they thought he had the flu. He was in and out of the hospital and ended up having an aorta anuryism and bled out at home.

Please update us here. I hope you have already taken him to the emergency room. Batteries contain chemicals and acids -- dimes do not. Please get him help immediately and let us know but only long after this thing is removed!

I cannot believe you waited all night, then got on here to ask what we thought. I would have immediately taken him to the emergency room. You are so blessed that God took care of your child when you refused to do so. Just because he was okay this time doesn't mean he will next time. Pay closer attention to the toys your child gets, and please stop neglecting his health and life, he could have gotten seriously hurt.

Just wanted to add...you should probably warn the dentist office that your son was able to get a hold of the battery and swallow it. (Usually batteries are held in by a screw)
Hope all is ok and will be looking forward to the update. (Also, don't beat yourself up about going here first as others have suggested. The important thing is you sought out help.)

A battery has acid. I'm glad you are taking him to the ER. Hope he's alright.
I also agree that if he was able to get to the battery then they should know not to hand it out to other kids.
