I just had some highlights done yesterday, and I need your help! I have really dark brown hair and I wanted them to be caramel in color...BUT, they turned out a very brassy yellowish color. Is there anything I can do to tone them down a bit?

Thanks ladies!

What can I do next?

go to sallys beauty supply and ask for a toner. The girls that work there are very knowledgable and will give you good advice.

Yes, you can put a toner on. I'd probably go back to the salon and ask to have the manager or a senior stylist look at it, and explain to them that you want to tone the gold/brassiness down.

You could tone it yourself, but if you have no experience with haircolor at all, it would probably be best to let a professional handle it. You could go to a beauty supply store, and explain that you want a toner to neutralize the brassiness, and they should be able to advise you on what to buy, and even on how to apply, if you think you could handle it yourself. A toner is basically just a wash that you'd put over your whole head, but it doesn't lighten, so it just tones the lightened strands whatever 'tone' the toner is (i.e. beige, ash, etc.) They aren't hard to apply, you'd just want to get some advise on what you'd need to buy.

I am a license Cosmetologist. I would suggest going to a salon to get this done or purchasing a semi permanent (I like redkin shades (Cafe Au Lait, may fav color, for highlights), semi permanent, -license cosmetologist only can buy this though) hair color in the desired shade and basically put it on your hair like you would normally and let it set for the appropriate time no longer, then rinse. It will tone your color down. You can also talk to the stylist that did your hair and see if you can come back at a discounted price and have them fix it. Good luck.

PS- try checking Sally beauty supply for a semi permanent in your desired color. If you don't want to go to a salon.

I'm sure your hairdresser will fix them for you, she probably doesn't want you walking around with them any more than you do, it's her name that's attached to them. Just call her up and explain, I've been there.

Either a toner OR you can try a purple shampoo... Joico is the best one and you can get it at Sallys or any beauty supply

Did you have this done at a salon? If yes, go back to them and ask them to fix them.

If no, go to a salon and ask them to fix them. And do not do them on your own in the future. =)

I would go back to the salon and make them fix it-if you're not able or reluctant to do that-try a light brown that you do at home-don't leave it in long-it should help.

I was just thinking that mine were too brassy the other day. I have dark brown hair like you. I will have to ask my hairdresser about toner next time. For now i am not too worried about it. I dont think others notice it.

Go to Sally's beauty supply, in the color area look for liquid color that is Ash 11. It will probably be labled A11 (don't mix it with developer) put it all over your hair and get in the shower and wash it out. The brassy look means that the caramel color is pulling red. Ash's primary color is green. The ash will tone down the brassy parts. Just leave it in long enough to get in the shower. Normally when a hairstylist does bleach highlights and it doesn't completely process it becomes brassy looking. We can normally notice this while washing the bleach out and apply an ash color in the sink, let it sit for a min or so and wash it out..... many call this toner instead of oops your hairs orange! haha
