This is for all your hairstylists out there! I used to go to a salon and get my hair colored and highlighted, but due to the financial cost of it, I decided to have my husband dye my hair for me at home. I have been dying it on my own for about 6 months now. I have been using Natural Match Golden Blonde, which has been working out great. I decided I wanted to go lighter and went with Natural Match Lightest Golden Blonde, which turned my hair kind of brassy/orangey. It's not too bad, but I really don't like it. So, I went to Sally's and on the advice of the salesgirl, I bought some of this "Red Gold Corrector" that is purplish-blue in color. I add about 5-7 drops to my shampoo and then leave it in for about 5-10 minutes. I will say that it has helped a little, but it's still slightly orange/brassy looking. So, now that it has been three weeks since I last colored, I want to color again and was hoping someone out there can direct me to a color I should use. I did some searches online and I know I definitely have to stay away from ashy tones, which I kind of knew, but I can't get a definitive answer on what color I SHOULD use. I know I will be staying away from anything with "golden" in it, too. Also, I did go to the L'Oreal website (makers of Natural Match) and I try to call the toll-free number they provide, but it does not go through. The recording says that we are not in the calling area. I was hoping they could direct me to a color to try.
So, here I am looking to those informative mamas out there who could help me. Thanks in advance for your help!
I had e-mailed a professional stylist through a website I found and she finally got back to me telling me to try a blonde color with "beige" in the color. I tried Feria's Light Beige Blonde and it did the trick! My hair looks awesome and it is the color I have been trying to achieve for a while now. Thanks to you all for your advice!

BE CAREFUL!!
I was dying my hair for a long time, about five years, always using the same color, the same way etc... All of a sudden the color I used was discontinued so I stuck with the same brand and found a color that was as close as possible. OH MY G_D BAD MISTAKE!!!! I ended up looking like Woody Woodpecker. the first four inches from the root were ORANGE. I also went to sally's and was given a few suggestions on how to fix it, went home to try it, and while it worked reasonably, the next time I went to color my hair, with the product suggested by Sally's as well as a colorist I know, it was BOZO all over again. At that point I dropped the rubber gloves and headed out to the salon to have it professionally fixed and five hours later and over $400 I finally looked like me. I vowed that day to never do it myself again, because the cost to fix it was a lot worse than the cost to keep going to the salon. At least when a professional screws up, they have to fix it for free. So like I said be careful!!!! Now I have a stylist who takes care of me every 6 wks for $150 color and cut, and if nothing else the peace of mind is worth every penny. (not to mention the two hours on a Saturday I get to pamper myself with no kids around...also very much worth the cost.)
Hi L., not sure if this will help you or not but i naturally have med brown hair. i bleach mine blonde myself. the best product that i have found is blondeime by loreal use ashe blonde. I use etra light ashe blonde. Any way the ASHE blonde colors are much better at getting the red out so that your hair does not look brassy
I'm not a stylist, but this is what I know from my own stylist. Because your natural color(the root) has not been colored, it can pick up a brassy/orange tone. From what I understand, if you stick with the same color over and over again, you should get the desired affect. Now, do not quote me on this...I think this is the story, but am not a pro. If you want, my hairdresser is now doing hair out of her home for a discount on certain days. She is located at california and irving.
its not about what to use its what not to use THIS IS FOR ALL MOMS THAT HAVE TO DO THIS!!
DO NOT GET CREATIVE DONT GO LIGHTER AND DONT GO DARKER WITHOUT PROFESSIONAL ADVICE the problem is the new growth has no color on it and your rest of your hair has lots of color so they will never come out the same with the same product I work in a very busy salon in wheaton and have been in salons for 12 years. as a colorist i have to very carefully calculate where your natural color is and where you want it to end up then i have to take into account whats on your ends and use something different because the integrity of the hair is different this is why you dont get salon results in a box good luck on which box to use if you must i dont recommend it
I am not a hairstylist, but I have made the lighter color mistake. I went out and bought the color that most closely matched my normal hair color to correct it. It worked out well.
What I would do is buy the color you used before, "Natural Match Golden Blonde" and then buy a lighter blonde highlighting kit if you still want to go lighter. You could do the cap or have your husband help you (what a great guy, by the way!).
Good luck and let us know how it turns out!
hi there Ive been a stylist for 3 years now so i could help you out..go to sallys and get a demi permadent color called a toner..level 9-10..with a violet base..violet cancels out brassy tones mix that with a nuetral color..that will help it look more natural...leave it on for about 10 -15 min then rinse dont shampoo and that should help you alot..the girls at sallys should be able to help you with finding the levels and tones.
L.,
the BEST advise i can give you is not to use box color!!!
when you come into a salon we specially formulate your color for your hair. the reason that you came up orange is because it is illegal to sell a high level developer to the general public. if you have dark hair or warm tones in your hair it most likely lifted to a rust/ orange color<<< since this is what most likely happened to you, blue/violet drops arent gonna work, those are mostly for people with hard water/ well water/ light blondes. if youre still that funkey red color-- the best advice i have if youre going to buy box color to fix it is to buy a color that specifies "ash brown" or "ash neutral" the ash in the color is going to help tone down all of the warmth. you normally dont want to put ash on your hair if you like a natural look, but in this case you want it to look normal.
GOOD LUCK!!!
Hi - my mom was a professional stylist and taught me how to color my own hair. What's your natural color? Best to stick with 1-2 levels darker or lighter than your own natural color. Also look at the color bottle and see if what the "base" is (can't remember as it's been a while since I was a blond, but I think I avoided the Red-Orange, Orange, Gold bases, as they would give that brassy orange glow). The ash colors will actually probably give you a very pretty natural blonde color.
I'm naturally a light ash brown ( I call it "mouse brown") and when I wanted to be blonde, I actually found that using the Med Ash Blonde by Loreal (at Sallys), it was actually a very pretty golden blonde for me - using any other blonde color gave me a very brassy color (I'm a redhead now).
As far as the coloring processs, are you doing the roots/new growth first? Use a squeeze bottle with a pointy nozzle tip for better control of formula application, and run it up & down your scalp part line, then across your head to divide it into 4 quarters, then "scribble" the color along the hairline root up to your outgrowth and massage up into your hair on just the new growth area and let it sit for 20 min; the last 5 to 10 minutes, apply the remaining color mix and pull it through your ends.
anyway, this is what worked for me - hope it helps!
