High-Back Booster Seats W/ LATCH

My tiny daughter isn't big enough to change her seat from 5-point harness to the belt-positioning booster yet, but I have a question for when the time to change comes...

The seat has the LATCH system for when she's in the 5-point harness. Can we just leave the seat attached with the LATCH when we remove the 5-point harness? Or at least have the LATCH belt attached loosely?

I ask because I don't want the seat to be able to fall / move when she's not sitting in it. Or does everybody just buckle the car's seat belt back on it after the child gets out??

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the responses! I'll have to check the manual when I get home. I doubt it will let you use the LATCH tho. It's a Cosco high back booster seat. Not the greatest, I know, but we have never been able to afford the high-end seats. Might do some research and see if I can possibly afford a new seat in a few months though (a better one).

I hadn't thought about the car having a weight limit on the LATCH system too, will have to check that manual as well!

you would have to read the manual for the seat you have. I know some of them tell you to not use the latch while used as a booster. I bought a sunshine kids montery booster it does provide latch more for keeping the chair from sliding. how it differs I do not know but according to some it does. I have had the seats latched and not latched and I don't really have a problem with them sliding around or falling over. The seat belt works pretty well holding it in, now if you get in an accident im sure the seat would fly forward. If your seat says not to use the latch i would either buckle it back in or kust put it in as a booster.

If the seat has a latch system you can continue to use it. When you convert her seat to belt positioning you can leave the back on and continue using the seat attached. Actually, for safety reasons you should continue to use it. Don't loosen the length of the tie so that the seat is not tightly latched. This is dangerous whether or not your child is in it. It defeats the purpose of the tie down.

Nothing about the seat changes except use of the 5 point harness and the use of the shoulder positioning harness. Perhaps I don't understand your question?

NO! Do NOT use the LATCH system in booster mode unless the manual specifically states its ok to do so. And if its a combo seat (harness then booster) it likely does NOT allow it. The seat is meant to move with the child in a crash, and if you use hte LATCH when its not allowed, the seat won't work properly in booster mode. Some dedicated booster seats (Britax, Sunshine Kids) allow LATCH for their boosters but most do NOT. So unless your manual states that its ok to use the latch while in booster mode, don't do it.

When your child isn't in the seat, you hook it in with the belt to keep it from becoming a projectile in the car.

Also, please look into extended harnessing and how a booster seat should properly fit a child. Seats like the Alpha Omega, Eddie Bauer/Safety 1st 3-in-1 make terrible booster seats, consistently failing every crash test because of the belt path not fitting children properly and causing major abdominal injuries.

Anyway, do not use LATCH while in booster mode unless the manual states clearly that you can use it while in booster mode. But likely you cannot.

If your manual states you can use latch in booster mode, then it's okay. But if it states not to use LATCH in booster mode, then I wouldn't recommend it. It really depends on which seat you have. I know the Graco Nautilus and Britax Frontier allow latch in booster mode. I'm pretty sure the eddie bauer/safety 1st 3-in-1's do not allow latch in booster mode.

Refer to your carseat manual! Cars made after 9/05 have a higher latch limit. I think I believe I know what you are talking about, the top tether not latch!

CHECK YOUR MANUAL. Every car seat is different and you must read the manual. You could also check with safekids.org to find a car seat inspector in your area who can check your car seat and make sure that it is in correctly. Also, as far as Latch having a 40 pound limit--that restriction is determined by the maker of your vehicle, and most car seat manuals will tell you to check with the manufacturer of your vehicle. My vehicle has a higher weight limit on the latch system, but not all cars do.

Depends on the manufacturer but the simple answer is "no".

We have the Britax Frontier and it clearly states in the manual that LATCH is not to be used once the child passes 40 pounds or if in booster mode.

Not sure what brand of seat you have but the manual will clearly instruct you as to how to proceed. If you no longer have the manual, google "manual for <>" and you should be able to find it online.
