Im just wondering how to know when Im supposed to get a different carseat for my really tall 2yo daughter. The one she's in now is one of those that the backrest comes out, then the whole back somehow comes off to make a booster, like stages. At this point I just want a whole new carseat. We took the back rest off and somehow the straps never got put back in the same way and dont adjust. Anyways, Im not convinced we'll ever get it back to normal and I feel like she'd just be much safer with a new one. Anyone know how to pick out a carseat? I honestly have no idea, by age? inches tall? weight?....I feel silly, but I do not know. Help?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for the input and different websites. I have this next week off with my main girl, so we'll probably be out and about looking for a safer seat for her. For those who asked for her measurments and have a good recomendation, she is 32 pounds and 32 inches tall. Thanks again guys!

I suggest getting one that goes from 9-36 kg. They are much more solid and can be adjusted to recline when the child falls asleep. The boosters are a little wimpy and the child doesn't have enough support when they sleep.

Becky has given you some great information. Read through it carefully. You can also go to www.seatcheck.org and get "fitting" proper inspection information. Not all car seats are made for all cars; so know this. They can give you great advise. I am actually happy you are aware of the need for your seat to fit correctly on her. As a professional this makes me feel good; as a mom I understand your concern. Know they keep growing too.... (LOL) My second grader is already 4'11. Can you believe it... We have had car seat challenges since they were 6 months old. (((HUGS))).

I understand- we have a very tall child, too. The poster that said kids aren't ready for a booster until the kid is kindergarten age is wrong. It depends on the size of the kid, not the age of the kid! When I took my daughter in for her 4 year check-up, she was already 42 pounds and 42 inches tall. The doctor told me that she was ready for a booster seat. I was surprised, but I looked at the instruction manual for my carseat (a convertible 3 in 1- Alpha Omega 3 in 1), and it said she should be in a booster. Her doctor said that keeping them in the 5 point harness when they should be in the booster is actually more dangerous for them. Anyway, after checking it out, you do have to go by the size of your child. A child that is at the top of their % for their age is not the same (carseat wise) as a child who is at the bottom % of their age. We really like our Alpha Omega, and it was very easy to transition her to a booster. Just take out the straps, make sure the headrest is in the top position, take off the base and pop out the kickstand. Whalla. Take a look at the instruction manual for your current carseat. It should say a height and weight max for it. If your child exceeds that, then you need to get another carseat. There are also people who do carseat checks for a living. You usually have to make an appt with them, but they'll check your carseat and make sure it fits your child for free. I moved states so I'm not sure where to send you, but if you do a google search for your state you should be able to find one. Good luck!

We just purchased the Brittax Regent for our 4 1/2 year old daughter. We were just not ready to put her in a booster. It is much safer to be in a 5-point harness. WE all LOVE IT! She is comfortable in it and will still fit in it for many years to come! And it is truely no bigger than the previous carseat we had for her. (As her other one was quite large too. It was from Toys R Us. Maybe a Graco???? Can't remember for sure what it was.)

So I highly suggest the Regent. We got ours online on clearance for $160 or $165 dollars with FREE shipping.

The car seat you currently have should have a manual that lists the height and weight minimums and maximums. You may want to go to a store that displays the car seats like Babies R Us or Target so you can read what the height/weight requirements are before you buy one.

we have a convertible car seat (Cosco Brand). they're decently priced and very sturdy. our 2yo is 32+ inches tall, and this one works great. straps are easy to adjust and installing it is super easy too. and the cover comes off so you can wash it too.

How tall is she? We have tall kids, and we have the Britax Regent:
http://www.amazon.com/Britax-Regent-Youth-Seat-Sahara/dp/...
It will last them until they're ready to sit in a seat without a booster. 5-point harness is MUCH safer than a booster. As far as I know, Britax is the only company that makes 5-pt harnesses that go up to 80 pounds.
They're pricey, but the peace of mind and quality makes it worth the price.

I don't know how close you live to Plymouth MN but through the city of Plymouth fire department they sell carseats at cost and can help you figure out which seat will get your child through to the 80lb limit. We got an evenflo 5 point harness for my tall 2 year old too that she fits in so much better. It retailed for 120 and we got it for 69. It's open to people who don't live in Plymouth as well. I don't have the number on me right now but I think you can go to the city of plymouths website and get info there.

Kids are NOT ready for booster seats til kindergarten age like 5-6ish..

I fit my daughter in a Britax Marathon up until she was around the age of 7. She was in a 5pt.harness traditional carseat. She fit great and loved it. 5pt.harness seats are so much safer than a booster.

Now my daughter is 8.5years old and is in a Britax Regent with plenty of room to grow. Again a 5pt harness not a booster.

There are many other wonderful seats out there too.

Can you get me the make and model of your car seat, along with her height and weight, and torso height (seat her against the wall and measure from the floor to the top of her shoulders). Its easier to recommend a car seat if I know these things. I'm not familiar with the seat you described... the only seats the back comes off of is a belt positioning booster seat, and no 2yr old should be in one of those.

There are many seats I would recommend for a 2yr old. My boys were (and both still are) very tall boys.My youngest rear faced in his Britax Marathon until he was 3yrs old, 33lbs, and 41" tall, and he still had room to grow height wise, but was at teh rear facing weight limit.

The tallest seat on the market is the Britax Regent. It will harness to 80lbs and the top harness slot is 19.5". My 7.5yr old is 52" tall and still has room to grow in this seat. Youcan find smokin' deals on it right now... originally $300 and right now you can find them online for $150. www.hipmonkey.com is a great site to purcahse from, all proceeds from sales go to the Kyle David Miller Foundation.

The Graco Nautilus will harness to 65lbs, then becomes a high back booster to 100lbs, and does convert to a no back booster if necessary. Its $150 online, and a great deal. The top harness slot is 18.5" so it easily fits most kids in the harness to age 7, then they can use it as a high back booster. I really like this seat too.

Evenflo Generations65 will harness to 65lbs, then becomes an ok booster seat to 100lbs. Its $99 at Babies R Us. I haven't been able to mess with this seat yet, but so far it seems like a good option among CPST's.

STEER CLEAR of the 3-in-1 type seats like the Cosco Alpha Omega and the Eddie Bauer/Safety 1st 3-in-1. They are ok for rear facing, but they only harness to 40lbs, and the top harness slot is very short, and the very top one can only be used in booster mode. Most kids outgrow this seat in height by 3yrs old, and it makes a TERRIBLE booster seat. Its a wide seat, and it holds the belt too far away from the child, and it puts the lap portion of hte belt up on the belly, not down on the hips like it should be. ANd it doesn't route the shoulder portion of the belt properly for most kids. It makes a terrible booster andI wouldn't recommend it at all. For the money, you can find a much better seat that will last your child in the harness years longer.

I would also recommend you visit www.safekids.org and find an event or CPST (Child passenger safety technician) in your area so you can learn how to properly install and use the car seat every time. Its also imperative that you READ THE MANUAL to the car seat and your vehicle so you know how to install the car seat, where to install it, and how to properly use ht car seat every time, every trip.

EDITED TO REPLY to something Caryn said - keeping a child in a harnessed car seat beyond the limits is dangerous, yes, but keeping an older child or taller or heavier child in a harness that is an extended harness car seat is NOT dangerous, and most kids are NOT ready for a booster seat until they are closer to Kindergarten age. Not only does size play a role (all kids shoudl be over 40lbs when moving to a booster seat) but mental maturity also plays a roll. The child has to keep the belt on properly, sit up at all times and not lay over or reach for things. The belt has to fit the child properly too, and most boosters, while the box may say 3 adn 30lbs, do not fit children that size and age well. ANd pediatricians are doctors, you go for them for you childs health, they are NOT car seat experts and are notorious for handing out bad car seat information. Please visit www.safekids.org for a CPST in your area.
