My first thought for the immediate issue is what can you cut back on as far as spending goes? Everybody has their splurges. Have you cut back on yours yet...whether it be eating out, cable/satellite, pampering things, spending more than necessary on clothes and food, expensive outings, phone bills like cell or land line as opposed to both, etc. Really, every family should be able to live off of one income mainly because of the unexpected, times like this, what child care expenses could be, expensive things breaking, etc. The vast majority do not do this, as evidenced in an outrageous number of people being over their heads in debt. But to live within your means takes out SOOO much stress. I really wish people would understand that and choose to live within their means instead of turning to debt and thus paying SOO much more for things because they are paying interest on everything. I'd much rather have less stress than the extra little luxery. It really urkes me when people blame the credit card companies. We are responsible for what we spend and we are responsible for living within our means. Somebody was recently telling me how she no longer gets government aid for child care as of recently as she drives around a new $50,000 vehicle. Pretty obvious that vehicle is out of range with a comment like that. She added stress to her life by buying the more expensive vehicle. We need to make choices to live WELL within our means instead of buying all the toys we can and then complaining that we don't get tax dollar aid or don't have some other toy/luxery. Sorry for the soapbox. Likely doesn't apply to you from what you wrote, but I don't want you to get in that mess that so many people are in. Almost everybody goes through some kind of really tight time I think at some point in life. It's hard financially with a family and this is not a cheap area to live. But it is possible and for you, this time will surely pass. I agree that it would be hard to get a job at this point in pregnancy as an employer would see maternity leave coming so soon. Just try to take steps toward habits of less spending if possible, to help in the long run and even to get you through this time. The second income when you gain it again should be for things like building up good savings for retirement (like 401K & IRAs), crisis time savings and then with what's left still, big ticket items and maybe some of those splurges. So to start, try to make it a goal to live within the means of one income, though tight now because you don't have that cushion built up. Then when you get back to work, start building that cushion! You are surely not alone, but hopefully this helps to think through some of the budgeting you are facing. Best wishes to you!!
