My hubby bless his heart thought a degree would open doors for employement, well 6 months post graduation still unemployed! Briefly about him he was in the military for 8 yrs, then realestate for 4 yrs, and now holds a BS in accounting and information management. His "dream" job would be either auditing or cost accounting, but anything related to accounting at this point would be great. We live in the Dallas area now but would be willing to relocate for the right position. He is such a hard worker and so smart, I hate seeing him this depressed over not having a job. If anyone can help him, please let me know and TIA.

What can I do next?

Since your husband is so smart, it may be his best interest to start his own business. He has already missed tax season which would have given you guys extra income and exposure to others that may require more services.

If he can't find a "job", he just like many others may need to create his own opportunities. Times are changing and we need to change with them. He may want to connect with small businesses and provide assistance to them or try getting hired with an accounting temp company. Unfortunately, having a BS degree in Accounting doesn't hold the same weight as having a CPA which you would need to work for a firm in accounting to acquire along with taking the exam.

If he is any good at information management and the computer side of the accounting equation perhaps he can develop accounting software or figure out how to improve an already existing system.

Long story short, he needs to be encouraged to think outside the box because the ordinary box has shrunk to almost nonexistent.

I would have him get in touch with Accountemps in Dallas to get started on some temporary accounting assignments. The temporary staffing sector is picking up quite a bit and he can build work experience, gain professional contacts and potentially land a temp-to-hire position. Accountemps is also affiliated with Robert Half, which does full-time placements.

Best of luck to him!

He could contract himself out. Start advertising his services and try to get temp jobs helping small businesses and individuals who are in business for themselves. People who need help, but can't afford a permanent position in their company, but could pay per hour or per job (just don't over bid it!).

I started being a Virtual Assistant 2 yrs ago and charge $20-25/hr. People need accounting help all the time. He just needs to advertise himself.

Good luck!

I second getting on with Accountemps. I used a similar group in KC, Accounting Principles, http://www.accountingprincipals.com/local/ and it looks like they may have a branch in your area. I was laid off last feb and they had me a temp to perm job by March. Even if he cant get permanent work through them, temp work is good and he might be able to get something permanent this way.

Honestly, the only "company" that's hiring like crazy right now if the federal government. Sooooooooo wrong if you ask me, but that's a rant for another day. At any rate, have him check out USA Jobs. It's online. As a veteran he gets a prefered status for employment with the government. However, the hiring process takes a while! There are tons of hoops and red tape, but it can be done. My hubby is an intel analyst so he basically HAS to work for the government since we got out of the military. He's worked as a civilian for the Navy for a couple of years now.

Best of luck!

Temping is a good way to get your foot in the door. I am ex Frito Lay corporate and we hired from the temp pool because they knew the business, we knew if they fit in or not.

Network Network Network to get his name out there. I know there are some organizations where people looking for jobs meet about once a month or so and go over ideas, support each other, etc. I can find out the name if you want, we had a friend going to the group and he spoke highly of it.

I agree with Virtual Assistant as well. Our company is based from our home and upon expanding, we will probably opt for virtual assistance.

Contracting out is also good. Set your own hours and $$

Best wishes and I hope he finds something soon.

Has he considered temping? A lot of companies are not hiring full-time right now, but I would think that if he started out as a temp, when they do start hiring, they'd start with the folks that are already doing the job. I used to temp many, many years ago and the company kept trying to hire me (I was perfectly happy temping, so I turned them down every time). It might just be another lead for your husband to look into. Start by googling "temp agencies" for your area. Good luck!
