Help with School Project - Wearing Our Garbage

Hi Mamas!

So my daughter, who is in Kindergarten, has a project for Earth Day at school. Make something you can wear with your recyclables. They will be walking the school to show off their creations, and there will be an assembly where everyone will wear them.

Her ideas have centered around cutting up pop cans and wearing them, which, of course, will rip her to shreads. She has not come up with anything else, even though we have gone through the recycling bin. I'm not terribly creative and am having a hard time helping her come up with an idea to wear our garbage.

Please help creative Mamas!

What can I do next?

When you wear the soda cans you don't cut them in half you just poke holes and string them. I have a friend who made body armor out of beer cans! :p

You could start with a cardboard box and go from there as well. Does she have pierced ears, you can make some lovely earrings out of soda cans. :)

When we were younger we made vests and dresses out of brown paper bags..maybe you can do an outfit from paper/plastic bags, and then use pop cans joined by string/yarn as accessories like Jo suggested. Maybe milk/2 liter jug shoes or hat?

Oh, and of course those folded newspaper hats we made as kids (you know, like making a "boat" or "hat" depending on how you folded it?).

Ahh, this is easy. Attach a shampoo bottle, a bread bag, a cereal box, a water bottle, a toilet paper and paper towel tube, an empty toothpaste tube, an old toothbrush, a milk carton, a bag full of "junk mail", receipts, a bar soap box or shower gel bottle, etc.
THINK of the things that are in your trash EVERY day, it's insane how much garbage is produced, especially due to containers.
Maybe get some twine and loop all these things together and let her wear them around her neck or DRAG them hooked to her ankle.

does it have to be a full outfit?? the only thing that comes to mind for me is to make a hat out of some stuff.. maybe cut a 2Lbottle of soda in half or a gallon of milk and glue some cut up pieces of soda cans onto it?? .. a hat is the only thing i can think of that she can wear that wont scratch her up from cutting the stuff apart

I watch project runway and one of the challenges was to use unconventional materials. one of them made a dress out of paper. Could you cut up boxes and make a dress out of them? you could hook them together with yarn or use the paper and make a hat?

and an fyi your not wearing the garbage your repurposing the recylables. wearing the garbage brings to mind banana peels and coffee grounds lol

I had a teacher in 4th grade in the early 70's who was way ahead of the curve on recycling. He had us bringing in juice can's and shoe boxes to make into other items.

Well, clothes are recycled as well. Maybe she could wear some hand-me-downs and on the clothing attach bits and pieces of recycleables, kind of like a collage. For a hat, I would make something out of a gallon milk jug. She could use paper towel or toilet paper rolls to make some sort or legging or sock (you'll obviously have to slice them open and tape/glue a couple together to go around her leg. )

Sounds like a lot of fun at your house tonight trying to put it together. Good luck!

What about just making bracelets and a belt out of the pop can tops? I've seen purses made out of them and they look very cool. http://pinterest.com/sherron/pop-can-tab-crafts/

Good luck!
