Help with Noise Problem

I have just moved from east to west coast and have what I consider to be a major problem with my new location. I have just rented and moved into a lovely house with really nice landscaping etc. Problem --- the house is located very close to a very busy road with more car noise than I like. Inside is OK but I'm an outside person and the noise outside is not pleasant. I'm considering buying wireless outdoor speakers for a least some distraction if not to completely overcome the care noise on the patio --- any other suggestions or input on buying speakers would be helpful.

What can I do next?

A couple of nice fountains or water features strategically placed around the property can drown out more than one might think...not to mention they're nice to look at, they add beauty and charm to any space, can set the mood, create a calm and relaxing atmosphere, provide ambiance, and provide for lush plantings (if you are so inclined) there really isn't a down side unless you find your bladder on the weaker side, or easily persuaded by the sound of water regardless of how it's running; rushing, flowing, bubbling, trickling...however if your bladder less inclined to say bubbling water, not easily persuaded by trickling or flowing, you simply choose a water feature which incorporates water in such a way that it allows only water that rushes, avoiding those persuasive sounds and uses of moving water opting not for the possibility of what one might consider or find embarrassing, not at all condussive to the mood atmosphere or ambiance you have outfitted your yard with, and probably harder to live with than say, the whole busy street annoying hum you were in hopes of ridding with your beautiful new water features.

We live near 2 major intersections, and I've not found anything truly helpful (sorry) - in our case, a lot of it has to do with the direction of the wind, the humidity levels, etc. We have a lot of semis that travel both roads, and that's usually the most of the noise.

Unfortunately, I've found our local goverment very apathetic to the situation and haven't found anything to help dampen it.

Good luck. I'll be interested to see what you come-up with.

Try earplugs, or headphones with your IPOD when you're outside. The earplugs won't deafen you completely, but will greatly decrease the noises you notice.

You might consider adding some sort of water feature. The sounds of moving water could help diminish the road noises. And add more landscaping if you have room.
