I was in a similar situation. I am 26 with 3 boys and divorced. I do not want to get fixed incase I do remarry and decide to have more kids, but at the same time I have had bad reactions to the bc I have been on (pills, shots, patches, rings, hormones). I have the non hormonal IUD which can stay in place for 10 years. I have only had it since December, and I am really enjoying it. My doctor said that I need to keep it in for at LEAST one year, but I can have it removed any time after that.

My only problem is that my period are not very regular (every 6 weeks I get it for a week, or when I am stressed), but that is the way I have ALWAYS been.....I know with the hormonal IUD it does regulate you, but I don't handle the extra hormones very well. Good luck to you and I wish you the best with any decision you choose!

The IUD is the best choice in my oppinion! I have never been able to take the pill. I tried the depo shot after I divorced my husband and had serious side effects to it... ended up getting a D&C due to not being able to get the bleeding stopped. My Dr suggested the IUD and I choose to get that done. He placed it in mid period and I had very little cramping ( it was done cramping with in 10 mins). When he took it out when I got remarried it was also mid period and I had no problems with that either... we are actually expecting a baby in two months, I got pregnant one month after it was taken out. The only down fall I found with having it in was that during intercourse he would occasinally hit it and it would hurt, but we learned how to position as to not hit it (sorry if this is too much info! just letting you know it is possible). If he would hit it then I would just check to make sure it was still in place and you need to check to make sure it is there every month when you have your peroid.
Also in the past I have had a miscarriage and a tubal pregnancy and having the IUD in place I did not have either one. I also still wore tampons.. pretty much anything you do before getting it in place you can do after.. for me it was out of sight and out of mind with the bonus of knowing that I was protected from getting pregnant. Good luck with it!!

I am also 23 and have to kids ( but mine are 21 mnths apart). I just got the Merina IUD about a month a go. The insertation was a breeze... however i haven't stopped spotting since i got it which i guess can happen in the first couple mnths. Its fatastic though! Not worring about taking a pill everyday or putting something on in the "heat of the moment". I too didn't want to do something like tubal ligation (however if you were to ask my while i was pregnant I would of said go for it). So this is why I did. Most insurances will cover a good amount if not all....of course call them to check how it will be covered and that the provider is Particpating. Good luck!! Oh and the IUDs were taken off the market in the 80s for issues with them like said previously....they fixed the issue and in the last i want to say 7 ish years they put it back on the market. If your doctor is in fear of something like that happeneing.....they wouldn't insert it.....jsut go by your doctor. Oh and bout the hormones too.....Its just pogestrone( i can't spell) Its effects the lining of the uterus...only very small amounts go into your blood stream so its safe when your breastfeeding and it won't effect your mental health like a pill....this one since it has the pogestrone, helps with cramps and heavy periods...thats all straight from my obgyn!

I am 37 and have four kids. I had my Mirena IUD inserted about 6 weeks ago and LOVE it. I have a tipped uterus that my Dr. was well aware of and the insertion was a breeze. No cramping, no problems whatsoever.

I am also a young mom considering an IUD. My kids are 4 1/2, 23 months, and 10 1/2 months. I am pretty discouraged by the whole thing right now because I recently found out that two people that I know have had problems with it in the past. One of them had the IUD penetrate through her uterus and she wound up pregnant the next month. They still to this day (2 1/2 years later have not found the stupid thing!) And the other found out that her IUD was nowhere to be found at one of her pelvic check-ups! While I am still considering it I am doing some extensive research first because there is long term damage that it can do!

My OBGyn actually suggested it to me. I had mine put in 6 weeks after having my second daughter. Same as you we were pretty sure we were done after two kids in two years but I was only 29 and wasn't ready to do anything permanent, although my husband offered as well. So, I had the Mirena IUD put in. Having it placed was painful and there was some intense cramping but it was over in 5 minutes. My girlfriend had the same one placed and she didn't even know they had done it it was over so fast and she had no pain. Anyway, I still get some very slight cramping around my period but other than that I never even think about it. The Mirena is good for 5 years, by then I will be 34 and we will have to make the final decision about whether or not to add a third!!

I have a Mirena that was just put in about 5 weeks ago. My only compaint so far is that I have been spotting continuously since it was put in. It's starting to slow down now, finally, but I still need to wear a mini-pad.

I'm also 23 and have two sons. Ages 2.5 and 3 months. I had my IUD put in 6 weeks after my 2nd was born. Insertion was a bit painful along with cramping for a few days. Now, I dont even notice it and dont have to worry about it for 10 years! I chose the copper one because it doesnt have hormones. My midwife suggested that route due to past problems with the pill. I dont know why more women dont choose this method of birth control. Good luck!

I had the Paraguard IUD inserted about 6 months ago and i LOVE it! it's horomone free and I don't have to think about birth control for years to come. I can't say enough good things about it. Yes, it was a little crampy when it was inserted but not too much more uncomfortable than a pap smear and WAY less painfull than childbirth :) I would HIGHLY recommend it!

I just wanted to let you know that one of my friends...24 with 4 kids...had an IUD put in over a year ago, and she is now pregnant with twins (was triplets, but sadly one didn't make it). There are a small percentage of people that get MORE FERTILE on the IUD.

You should talk to your husband about getting a vasectomy. It is not invasive and won't affect his "manhood" if you decide to have more children in the future, it can be reversed. My brother had one at 25, after his 3rd, and he couldn't be happier.

Good Luck with your decision!

I had the Mirena IUD placed about 7 weeks pp. I love it. I've had on and off spotting since it was put in -- and I've had it for almost 6 months now. My doctors have all told me this is a very common side effect, and for most women it goes away. Frankly though, I don't care.... it isn't enough that it bothers me or my husband, lol. I love not having to worry about taking a pill. I'm breastfeeding, so my bc options were limited. We aren't sure about more kids, but we knew we didn't want one SOON, lol, so it really made the most sense. Definitely be sure your doctor knows what they are doing. Insertion didn't hurt much for me at all, but then again I'd just had a baby so everything was pretty soft down there. I recommend an IUD to everyone. Good luck!

Hi Sorry to rain on the Love It!! parade but I had an IUD with the copper and 3 months later I was pregnant with my third child.
It worked for a while and was wonderful not haveing to worry about anything but there is a risk. My husband and I have heard a lot of stories about it happening to others since that happened to us. Another thing to is that your period gets a lot heavier too. Not to be rude but I was changing a Super Plus Tampon every hour. Not so much fun.

i am 43 and had an iud put in 5 years ago. and love it. i had my obgyn put it in and in five years never had any problems. mine is the type that comes out every 5 years so this july i have to have it replaced. but i have never had any problems. if fact i don't have any pms at all and really love that!! but i agree to have the dr checked out as to how many they have put in. also my obgyn put it in during my cycle-she had told me that it goes in easier that way. something more to think and ask about. don't be afraid to ask alot of questions- i would rather be safe than sorry! good luck.
