HI Moms,

I'm nursing my 3rd child a 5 week old and my breasts feel SO sore! Not the nipple area, just the whole breast in general and anytime it's touched or when a flow comes through there's an overwhelming soreness there that I don't remember having at all with my first two children. I'm nursing exclusively, no supplementing whatsoever so I know the baby is keeping me pretty empty but I'm still so sore and tender.
They almost feel like the soreness and painful breasts you get when you're pregnant....
Any advice on how to get through this painful time? I want to breastfeed for at least a year but really don't want to be in pain for up to another year!

Thanks so much for any advice.

What can I do next?

It gets better. I hurt so bad when I nursed, but it got so much better after a while. I nursed until my son's 1st b-day when he just decided he was finished (very difficult for me but no weaning process). Anyway. . .Just hang in there. Use some of those cold packs when you can and see if it helps. You may need to pump in between feedings to releive some of the soreness. You may just be producing a lot of milk and need to get rid of it more often than your baby is eating. That's good, though, because then you can store it away for later.

I feel your pain! I nursed my son until he got teeth and the first 4 weeks I nursed my son it was one of the most paiful experiences I have ever had. I would first rule out mestidous. I had this right after my son was born and this caused the majority of my pain in the begining.Do your breasts feel very warm or have you ran a temp while the pain has been happening? If so these are all signs of mestidous and are easily cured with simple antibiotics you can get from your OB/GYN. Also, My Dr. told me to wet a diaper with warm water and hold it on my breast in between feedings which felt WONDEFUL- really helped the soreness! Hope I could be of some help! Good luck, and hang in there!

Hi N., Do not put heat on them! That is the worst thing you can do. i would put a cold pack with a soft towel of somekind wrapped around it. Be easy.Thias happened to me with my second child but i wasn't breast feeding. They were so big & hurt very bad. They would just push my bra off (down) I eventually had to go & get a shot. Remember tho,i wasn't nursing (the shot). If you don't have an ice bag you can make one with a zip lock bag. Put about a cup or so of alcohol in it & put 2 parts water. Then freeze it. This is a soft ice bag. Good luck

You might try taking some Tylenol, put on some cold cabbage leaves (wierd, i know) and call your obgyn for other recommendations. Since this is your 3rd, you probably have already tried other things. I've been having major nerve pain off and on with my right side, and my doc said to just use more lanolin to make sure the nipple area was not cracked which leads to my problem with nerve pain. Hang in there!

No offense to the one that sugested the cabbage leaves but that is going to cause your milk to dry up.Dont no why but that is what my dr. recommended me to do when I was ready to stop feeding and I didnt want to use a Rx.
