Help! Need to Heal Blister from Nursing

Hi Moms,

My daughter is 9 months old and recently cut her first tooth. For some reason that led her to change her latch while feeding. Last Friday breastfeeding on my right side felt a little off and Saturday I noticed a blister on my nipple. It got to be the size of a pencil eraser and made nursing uncomfortable (especially during the initial latch). The swelling has definitely gone down, but the area is still sore. I have been letting my nipple air dry after feedings and have been putting all purpose nipple cream on to prevent an infection. I feel like the my daughter is latching on correctly again, but I don't know how to heal the existing damage. Has anyone dealt with anything like this or have any advice? Thanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement. I tried some of your suggestions and I'm slowly healing. Hopefully this doesn't happen with every tooth!

I fee your pain! A simple solution is after nursing, pour a capfull of hydrogen peroxide over each nipple, allow to sizzle (vague sting, but it is cleaning it out) and then rinse w/ a capfull of water. Air dry or use a burst of the hairdyer. Then cover with "Bag Balm" found in the medicine section of Shaws in a green metal tin. (lanolin base but WAY better!!) My lactation conslt. gave me these tricks with my first baby after weeping over my sore/cracked nipples and I noticed a huge difference right away!! I am currently using the same trick with my 1-mo old and already healing. Hang in there--it will get better!! Also, you can pump on that side for a couple days to give your sore nipple a rest! Good luck!

I'm on board with Krista. I had severe blisters from and improper latch also, and the lanolin based ointments do nothing for open sores, they just keep inact skin moist and soft. I was perscribed a "miracle cream" as well. You do have to pick it up from a drugstore that is also an apothecary, as it is a compound mixture. Do you live around Nashua, NH? The one on main street is where I had to go.

My dr. reffered to the cream as "triple nipple cream" ( i guess it had antibiotics, lanolin and something else). Krista said her dr. called it APO or something. It did wonders for my nipples, not to mention my wanting to continue breast-feeding. Everything had been going so well, but the pain was seriously so bad!!!

You just put it on after each feeding, let it dry, and don't have to wipe it off before the next feeding. It is safe for the baby. The sores cleared up almost immediately, it is crazy. Just ask your dr. about it, and if he/she isn't aware of it, I would find a local pharmacy that is also and apothecary and ask them what it is. Then you could have the dr. call to order it.

Good Luck girl, and seriously try to find this stuff, you will be so glad you did!! In the meantime, definately squirt some breastmilk on each nipp, and let dry between feedings. No soap when washing, and no towel-drying either.

googgle-Lansinoh Breast Creme this is what I used when I had the same problem. When my baby (second born) was just about to cut a tooth she would nurse a little differently, leaving me with a blister. I would treat the area before and after with Lansinoh Cream and it seemed to help heal things up with in 5 days. really there isn't much you can do other then when you think that you baby might be nursing differntly then normal, perhaps break the latch and re-latch on keeping to the basics-chest to chest & nose to breast. Out of my 4 children only one gave me blisters and it didn't happen for every tooth. I wish I had a magic cure for you....I will say YOU GO GIRL!!! Keep on nursing, this will pass, you are giving your baby the best by breast feeding!!!

This is one of those cases where the simplest of solutions is usually the best. Before you air dry, cover your nipple with breastmilk. Maybe do this 2 or 3 times before covering back up. I also highly recommend Lansinoh, if you are not already using it. I love the stuff and actually use it as chapstick. I'm sorry that you have this issue especially now, but hopefully you'll be able to find what works for you before the day your daughter decides to use you as a teething ring!!! Hang in there. Hope you feel better soon.

I have dealt with this many times. The air drying and nipple cream will help as will making sure she is latched on properly in the future. Otherwise it is just a waiting until it heals sort of thing. I know how painful it can be; sometimes changing her position can help (football hold instead of across your lap, for example). Good Luck!

I used a nipple butter from Earth Mama, Angel Baby. It healed up bleeding cracks in only a day- so it should work just as well on a blister.
It's an organic product that I ordered online- but I think you could find it locally if you called around.

It seems you are already using THE best cream out there - All Purpose Nipple Cream/Ointment (APNO, as other responders have mentioned). Its the best and heals the nipples very quickly. Apply frequently. Breastmilk is also good to help heal - just manually express and rub on the affected area. It should be gone in a couple of days. If the pain is too much, pump that side until it heals.

Our pediatrician gave me a prescription for this miracle stuff called APNO. You have to get it made at an apothecary, and it's pretty natural- so you don't have to worry about washing your nipples before feedings- it heals things like blisters, cracking, etc... so fast I could NOT believe it!!!! I would give my doc or pediatrician a call and see if they could call in a prescription for APNO at your closest apothecary.

Does your nipple cream have Lanolin in it? If not, try that, it works wonders.
