Hey! I am due in just 2 weeks with my 2nd baby. The ONLY thing I still need to get for her is a diaper bag. I am struggling with what brand/type to get. With my son, we used an old backpack, but that is long-gone! I bought an Eddie Bauer dipaer bag at Target, but I came home and read TONS of reviews online that the zippers broke and the velcro didn't work after a few weeks.
I'm considering the JEEP weekend tote....has anyone tried that bag?
I'm not looking to spend more than $40 or so. I also obviously need one that is big enough to accomadate 2 kids. Please give me any suggestions! I'm hoping to purchase a bag in the next day or two so I can get it packed for her arrival! Thanks....I can always count on you fabulous moms out there!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Wow, thanks everyone! You guys are the best! We went back to Target this morning and looked around. We also looked at Walmart. We didn't find anything we liked better than the Eddie Bauer one, so we decided to just stick with the EB one. Hopefully it'll last well for us! Thanks for all of your input! I will probably ask the hospital about the free black bag as well and see if they have one.

I have twins who are 6 months and I needed something that was well made and would hold a lot of things with two babies.. I also found one at Target I believe sounds like the same one you have, and I ended up taking it back. But then I went to Shopko and found a different Eddie Bauer one that has no velcro. And has a lot of zippers and pockets which I love and I stuff that thing full of baby items and I have never had a problem with the zippers breaking or anything. It is forest green with a plaid front of Maroon and greens. I love this bag and would toatlly buy it again if I was just looking for a new one as you are! It's a great buy. Good luck. I found it at the Bountiful Shopko if that helps!

I have a ju ju be and ABSOLUTELY love it. It was pricey ($130). I thought I wanted something cheap and economical but saw the ju ju be and bought it on the spot. For something that I have to carry around all the time I thought that I would treat myself. The quality is really good too (no zippers). They have them at Nordstrom. I recommend it to all of my friends. I also get a lot of compliments on it daily.

Hi becca,
just a quick little advice. Don't spend so much. I have learned that through four kids that we make due with what we have. I love going to thrift stores and near new shops so i don't have to pay the high prices for everything. A lot of times i buy brand new items. Then if you look at how much you are saving you could open a college fund or a vacation fund. Good luck and god bless.

I used a diaper bag from Land's End through 5 babies. It held up really well and if you ever have a problem they are great at returning and replacing.

Eddie Bauer hands down. I had mine for 4 years, the last year I used it for 2 kids, before it showed any wear. I had the smaller squarish one. I loved that it was compact but also huge (we exclusively breastfed so there wasn't that extra need to have space for bottles and formula) and that it had a pocket in front so I could just slip my wallet, keys and phone into it as well and not use a purse seperately. Not a single velcro or zipper problem. I'd still use it but after my son didn't need a diaper bag anymore we went with a girly bag for my daughter.

My eddie bauer bag has lasted through 2 children with no problems. It is incredibly comfortable (its the backpac type) and it frees my hands when i wear it on my back. also it holds a ton of stuff. I also have a beijo diaper bag because i had a beijo purse party. It is incredibly cute, but way too expensive. It has a fold out diaper pad, and it alos holds an incredible amount of stuff when you expand the zipper. I have it in pearl pink and it is the talk of town when i wear it out. the straps keep the bag right under your arm. THe beijo is super cute, but for the price the eddie bauer one i got from target definately is top pick. i think i even found it on sale ;) you could also try e-bay or second hand stores until you found one you liked without paying the big price upfront. they wash up nicely! hope this helps and CONGRATULATIONS! you are truely blessed!

I actually have 2 Eddie Bauer bags and they both have held up perfectly for 18 months. I read the reviews, but went with it anyway, because we had good luck with the one we had for our older daughter, but we handed it down. Give the Eddie Bauer one a try, if you still have it.

I used the Land's End diaper bags as well. I have the large and small sizes. They have lasted through all of my kids and various trips around the country. They don't look like diaper bags, so you can use them long after your kids outgrow diapers.

I've got two kids. I bought a big diaper bag with my first, but after a while, I switched to the free black one from the hospital. When I had my second (they're 2 years apart), I just stuck to the free ones. They wear out after a year or so, but I got two, so I just tossed one and switched to a new one. It had the perfect side pockets for a bottle and a sippy cup (or now, two sippy cups), a front pocket for diapers and a changing pad, a back slot for wipes, and the middle holds enough snacks and toys for both. It did get a little cramped when i had to haul a blankie along, but that didn't happen too often.
Seriously, I didn't like the one I bought at all, but love the free ones. Maybe you can give it a try before you shell out $40.

I don't know if this helps a ton or not, but Pottery Barn Kids, (Flatirons store), has some in the back on super sale. $19-$39. They are very sturdy, stylish and have tons of functional pockets.

Hi Becca - congratulations on your new arrival! We loved our Eddie Bauer bags we bought at Target. We have the larger sized one and the boxier smaller one in navy. We still use them because they don't look like diaper bags. They are both in great condition after 6+ years.

Pick one that you like the features of - not one that other people like. I'm a bag hog so I used all kinds of bags that weren't diaper bags. Big purses, computer bags, etc. I have a Louis Vuitton "barrel bag" that worked great. There are lots of cute diaper bags out now that look like purses.

I would suggest finding a bag or two that you like that coordinate with the colors you wear most often. You might also find something that your hubby feels okay carrying like a backpack or bookbag.

The "bottom" line is to think outside of the bag! have fun!

We have an Eddie Bauer backpack we really like. It works well for 2 kids or 1. We can put lots in it. I also have the Eddies Bauer with the zipper and have no problem with it. It's now more than 5 years old and being used on the 3rd go around. It's a challenge to fit 2 kids for us as we still carry a rescue inhaler with an adapter every where we go.

I opted to get a back pack purse, I couldn't find a back pack diaper bag. It has been awesome. The key is to get one with enough pockets on the outside for sippies and such. It has really worked out great. I am due in less than 2 weeks with our 3rd and I am going to look more seriously at getting a better solution, ie finding an actual diaper bag back pack.

I found that when I carried a regular diaper bag it made my shoulders hurt from carrying all the weight on one shoulder.

Good luck with your search, it is sooooooooooo important to get the right bag for your needs.

Hi Becca,

I used the same Lands' End diaper bag through all three of my kids. They are spaced about 27 months apart so the bag did have to do double duty.

Best Wishes,

Honestly, the free one that you get from the hospital is pretty good. With my son I had a Similac one, which was great. With my daughter I had the backpack style one from Good Start, not as good, but makes a great cooler bag for picnics in the summer! If you are looking to buy something I have a bag from JJ Cole that is roomy and easy to use. There are matching diaper, pacifier, and bottle holders available. Mine came from Target.com.
Good luck!

Besides the ginormous one you get to hold everything for both kids, get a small one for quick trips - grocery store, etc - that will hold a couple diapers for each, wipes, a thin changing pad to use on the tables in the restroom, and maybe a bottle with formula but not water (if you bottle feed) or spare nursing pads (if you breastfeed). You aren't going to want to lug the huge one around all the time, especially for short trips, and you'll have the essentials ready to go.

I tried a Fleureville bag, it was fine for a while, the straps kept falling off my shoulders when I would put babe in the car. SO I shopped and shopped for a new bag....

JUJU BE PACK-A-BE still is my favorite, 2 years now. Can convert from shoulder bag to backpack, narrow so I can lean into the car without snagging, capacity rocks-->can pack change of clothes and lunch for us both with water....lots of pockets, net pockets, solid zippers & strong magnet closures, changing pad, plus it's CUTE!

Anyway, that's my bag.

The best diaper bag I had wasn't a diaper bag but a messenger bag. It had enough room and pockets for me to put my stuff in too. So I didn't have to carry a diaper bag AND a purse. I use cloth diapers which take up more room than disposables so the messenger bag was perfect. Not only that the adjustable carrying strap made things easier too. Best of all, I spent $10 on it.

I dont know where you are having your baby, but most places give away a diaper bag while you are in the hospital. I deliver at St. Marks and with both kids I got new diaper bags. They are usually black and really simple, but they worked for me. Just call and ask the maternity ward, if they do that. Good Luck!

I haven't used the Jepp bag, but it's true Lands' End bags are practically bulletproof. I am still using the one I bought when I was pregnant with my first child, and he is nearly seven. It still looks pretty new, with some scuffs on the bottom but that's it.
My Lands' End bag is too big for daily use, however, now that I've streamlined what I need. I just use it on weekends for travel and major expeditions, such as going to church. ;) They have smaller, more updated styles of bags now and even with shipping you'd be under $40. I've always gotten my Lands' End orders in 4 days or less, and I'm also in Utah.
I used a Kecci brand messenger-style diaper bag for awhile with my second baby and it was great. The zipper finally broke after a year of near-constant use and I've neglected to repair it. It was a good bag and I got it on eBay for well under $40--that was about my budget at the time, too. It was beautiful, in an Asian brocade design, but that may not be your style.
Now, I am using my all-time favorite. It's a diaper bag from Peg Perego. I think it's called the Borsa Mamma. You could search around and find it on eBay or online for a reasonable price. It's the perfect size with exactly the right kinds of pockets and sturdy, sturdy hardware and nothing "babyish" or nerdy about it, if you know what I mean. It can be a nice shoulder bag or convert easily to a backpack, and a light-colored, easily-wiped interior so my bag doesn't become a dirty black hole. I honestly love it.
As a breastfeeding mom, I've never been interested in carrying the free hospital bag because I feel like it's just a marketing ploy for formula companies to make it seem as if their products are endorsed by the hopital, and I want hospitals to market health and nothing else and not undermine moms' confidence in their ability to feed their babies without corporate "help". . . .but not everyone has political feelings about their diaper bag, I realize! ;) Just a thought.
Your Eddie Bauer bag will probably serve you well for awhile, at least until you're tired of it and would like something new. But have a look at www.landsend.com and see if you like their medium-sized styles. I have two in diapers right now and both my Peg and my Lands' End bag are big enough to use with two children at once.
Good luck and congratulations!

I love my Eddie Bauer diaper bag. I got it when I was pregnant with my second daughter who is almost 3 and it is still in great shape. I have 3 kids now (almost 6, almost 3, and 1 year) and it's nice because it's roomy enough for all of their stuff as well as mine. It does get kind of bulky, but especially when they are little, it's worth it because you can take everything with you. I had the little Eddie Bauer one with my oldest daughter when she was a little bit older and it's still in pretty good shape. Good luck! For the day to day basis, I usually use the Similac diaper bag I got for free at the hospital. It's a great size.
