My daughter is 3 1/2 and will not poop in the potty. She pees just fine, but asks for a diaper when it is time to go poop. I have tried to make her sit and this results in 30 minute screaming fits. I have tried to not give her a diaper and she will hold it for 2 days until she is screaming that it hurts and I have to give her a diaper because I am afraid she will get an impaction or something. My pedi says, "just wait it out, she will go when she is ready," but she is in Montesorri and if she keeps holding it, she is going to hurt her tummy. How can I get her to go? I am getting serious pressure from my husband and I can't stand watching her suffer.....help mommies!

What can I do next?

A friend of our has struggled through this with her son as well. After two visits to the doctor because of impaction, she decided it wasn't worth the fight she was putting up. She just had him wear pull ups and kept encouraging him to poop in the potty. Fortunately there was no regression with the pull ups and he still peed in the potty. She had to be VERY patient. Finally, six months later he started going completely on his own and they haven't had any issues in about two months. Hang in there mama! I think it's a rather common issue.

I was in the same shoes just last week... My son is 3 3/4 and we thought it would never happen. Last week he said he thinks he wants to go poo on the potty. We sat there (more than 30 minutes) and read a book and he did it. of course, as promised we went to Toys R Us to get him a toy for being so brave. The next day he went in his pull-ups again, but the following day he went on the potty. He told us that he was scared it would hurt but it is not so bad after all. He has been going to the potty ever since. It will happen when she is ready. Don't give up!!

I'm in the exact same boat as you. My daughter is 3.5 and won't poo on the potty. You're husband does need to understand it's a situation that requires patience. My daughter has struggled with constipation since she was an infant. She has a fear of going poo and tries to keep it in. At our three year check up our pediatrician had us put her on a daily dose of Miralax. (1 tbs) She also advised us that this could take her 6 months to three years to get over. Hopefully it won't really take that long. I'm going to start rewarding her for not having poopy pullups to see if that does the trick.

She will poop in the potty when she is ready, I promise she will not go to high school in diapers. There is no reason why your husband should pressure you. I'm sorry but that is just wrong. He should put himself in her shoes. She might be scared but just be there for your daughter and sympathize with her and encourage her but don't rush her and don't get angry,or stress over it. stay calm, patient, understanding.
Show your daughter that you love her.

I hope this helps.

We are there as well, and I actually expected it. My daughter has pooped in the potty several times, but then goes back to the diaper. I am the same way with putting the diapers just so she will poop cause I don't want her hurting and know eventually it will happen. What I have done when she does poop is: Set a stool in front of the potty for her to put her feet on. It's harder to poop with your feet dangling (we adults don't even do that). If you notice many squat when they poop, so you want something that bends her knees up so its easier for her). Also, if she mentions pooping and then says never mind, I take her panties off and let her run around naked but remind her where the potty is. Every time she has done it is when I wasn't watching her and she had alone time (this obviously will depend on your child). Also talk about how cool it is to see the poop swirl down the toilet..lol. My sister had the same problem with her son and it took one time with grandma putting him on the toilet (she saw his face and put him on it real quick). So sometimes it takes someone else to be there instead of mom for that initial time.
