Does anyone have any advice on getting a 1 year old to sleep during the night. She used to sleep during the night but now she seems like she gets up at least once during the night. I let her cry for a bout 5 may 10 minutes but then I know she isn't going to let up, so I warm a bottle and change her and put her back to sleep, and then she is up at 7 or 7:30am.

This is what I was told by my pediatrician when my daughter was waking in the middle of the night. She is waking up because she is getting fed. She doesn't need to get fed in the middle of the night but she is used to it. I decreased the bottle by 1 ounce every week so she would get less and less. When it was time to start forgetting the bottle, there were a couple of nights that did have some crying, but after that it worked and she started sleeping through the night. Hope this helps and good luck!

I recommend that you read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child" by dr Marc weissbluth. He addresses various sleep issues throughout childhood and is a great resource.

Well, you have some really good advice already. I agree that she isn't hungry, she knows you are going to come in to get her. I have also heard that the book that the second poster reccommended was great. I like the water in the bottle idea. Even if she cries the first night because she is expecting milk don't give in. Good Luck!

I don't have any good advice, but just to let you know, your not alone! My daughter recently turned 1. Every once in awhile she will sleep through the night, but most nights she is up once. The longer I let her cry, the more she wakes herslef up. I usually go rock her with a bottle (she doesn't eat much, but does not stop crying until she gets the bottle) I uderstand your frusturation!!However, I figure she wont be little forever, and someday she wont want me (or need me) as much as she does now, so I just try to enjoy it! Good Luck!!

I would have been happy if mine was only up once a night! I noticed along with the previous poster that once I took the bottle away they started sleeping through the night more often. Most by that age don't want a bottle because they are hungry, it is more for comfort. Once they realize they aren't going to get a bottle they quit asking.

How long has the night waking been going on? My daughter started sleeping through the night at about 9 months, and every so often she'll go through a period of getting up during the night for a week or so. I used to drive myself crazy trying to figure out what it was and adjusting her sleep schedule, then finally I accepted that it just happens... sometimes she might have a touch of a cold, sometimes she's teething, other times she might just be going through a growth spurt. Sometimes I don't know why.

Sounds like my one year old son! At first, I didn't attribute his 1 or 2 am wakings to teething pain, b/c he would go to sleep peacefully after a diaper change and bottle. But when my husband and I started applying Oragel before bed "just in case," he returned to his habit of sleeping through the night. Just this past weekend, he began to have 1 or 2 am wakings again. I realized this morning that this time it's due to molar teething and the Oragel applications weren't working b/c we weren't applying it far enough back into his mouth. So tonight, we'll try again. Good luck!

Start putting water in the bottle instead of milk. Her tummy has gotten into the habit of having food at that time, you need to untrain her. As long as she is eating well during the day, she shouldn't need extra food at night.
I did the water in a bottle thing with my daughter and she started sleeping through again after about a week.

My now three year old had the same problem when he was one and half. I put a little t.v. in his room or radio and put a very calm movie on or cd so when he woke up in the middle of the night he wasnt in tears anymore because he either had alittle light and noise from a familar barney or he had alittle calm music to put him back to sleep.

I had the same problem with two of my kids, our pediatrician advised to get rid of the bottle at a year. We started putting water in their bottle when they woke in the night and they didn't want the water and when they quickly realized they were not getting a milk bottle they went back to sleep. It worked very well. We also put water in their bottles in the day to ween them off, you can also begin cutting the nipple on the bottle, they generally don't want it then. Obviously if you are not ready to have her off the bottle this info may not be very helpful, maybe for future use though! Best of luck.
