Help!! I Can't Quit Falling!

I feel like the biggest cluts right now--but night before last I was sitting at my computer and stood up and fell flat on my rear end! We are in the process of turning our office into a nursery--I am 28 wks prego--and I hit my head on the crib. I had a dr appt. yesterday and told him about it. He said to slow down and make sure my legs are under me and stable before taking off walking. I heard the baby's heartbeat yesterday and she has moved alot since the first fall. Well--about 30 minutes ago I was at Walmart and as soon as I got out of my car (SUV) I fell AGAIN--on my hiney again and buping my head on the car. (Needless to say I left immediately) I think I sorta threw my neck out bc it is KILLING ME now and it's creeping down to my shoulders. My baby is moving as I am typing this--so I don't know if I should call my doc about it. Is this normal? What do I do to stop falling? This is twice in two days!! TIA Addition: This is my third pregnancy and has never happened before--and being 28 wks along, I weigh about 165.

What can I do next?

I had the same thing as Janet said: the baby was positioned on a nerve. Once I started paying attention to what was happening, I could tell my right leg had actually gone to sleep no matter how long (or short) I had been sitting!
The last 4 weeks of the pregnancy I was put on 'bedrest' just because I could not get up safely!
Congratulations on the new addition!!!

Warning Signs or sign of strokes are clues your body sends that your brain is not receiving enough oxygen. If you observe one or more of these signs of a stroke or "brain attack," don't wait, call a doctor or 911 right away!

Sudden numbness or weakness of face, arm or leg, especially on one side of the body
Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes
Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination
Sudden severe headache with no known cause

Other danger signs that may occur include double vision, drowsiness, and nausea or vomiting. Sometimes the warning signs may last only a few moments and then disappear. These brief episodes, known as transient ischemic attacks or TIAs, are sometimes called "mini-strokes." Although brief, they identify an underlying serious condition that isn't going away without medical help. Unfortunately, since they clear up, many people ignore them. Don't. Heeding them can save your life.

After a Stroke:

Seventy percent (70%) of all stroke survivors aren't able to do the same job tasks as they were before. Thirty percent (30%) need help caring for themselves. Fortunately, people who have had a stroke can get back some or all of their abilities with speech and physical therapy.

One thing my doctor told me to do when I kept falling while pregnant with my first child. He told me to get up slowly and walk slowly - as if I were getting up or walking holding my newborn that I had finally gotten to sleep after a LONG time trying to get him to sleep. I didn't remember all the time, but when I did fall after that, all I could think was "Dang it! I woke the baby!" If nothing else, it was good for a bit of comic relief. The suggestion was meant to slow me down enough that my disproporionate body could get adjusted and balanced to actually engage in walking. Sounds crazy, but I know you know what I mean.

Slow down. It is best to be late (even to the bathroom) than to hurt yourself or your baby.

Wow, there are just so many things that could be. I know when I was pregnant I always had horrible sinus problems and it would throw my balance off.

But seriously, go back to your doctor. Tell him you are un-easy about this. It could be your blood pressure dropping as you stand up. And that needs to be taken care of ASAP.

There are just too many things that it could be and I would either go back to the doctor, or find one who will listen to you.

Best of Luck!

It sounds like you have too much going on. SLOW DOWN!! Don't try to do everything. Too many falls is definitely not good for you or the baby. You definitely do not want to bruise your tail bone or brake it. Your doc is right, make sure you have a stable ground before you move. If it is bad now think how it will be when you can't see your feet.... Take it slow and brace yourself. Every pregnancy is different.. and for fun have your doc check your ears... your equilibrium might be off... (I think that is how you spell that) :)
take care

This is NOT normal. I'd go back to your OB/GYN and DEMAND him to take you seriously. I would consider a referral to a neurologist. This is no something I'd take lightly. If your ob/gyn won't help you---find someone who will.

As an labor and delivery nurse my first response would be that with every fall you need to notify your OB and see if he wants you to be checked out. Second as a person who has been through a third pregnancy with a toddler and a kindergardener you sometimes don't remeber the need to move slower as your center of balance changes. It is truly hard to slow down when you want to keep up with all the things you were doing for your family.
Before jumping up out of your chair or moving too fast to do something that normally would not be a problem take a deep breath, exhale, and then stand up it will make you slow down some.
That is most likely the problem. But if it continues then your doctor will need to check it out. As you stand up your blood presure may drop one thing he needs to check out. Good luck and take care

I do not think it is normal to be falling all the time. Are you dizzy at all? It is worth mentioning to your doctor again. Call his office and tell the nurse that this is still happening. Your weight isn't that high and you're not huge at 28 weeks. This shouldn't cause you to be so unstable. There are several things that can cause this that are easily taken care of, some involving diet. I don't know everything and I am not a doctor, but I was a Labor & Delivery Nurse for many years.

I would call just for piece of mind. When I was 5 months prego I fell. Everything was fine. I blame my shoes. Are you wearing shoes that are stable? Go slow and check your shoes. Your probably a little off balance getting toward the end. Are you dizzy at all?

Your doc is absolutely right! Pregnancy can make you unstable. So make sure you have both feet under you before taking off. Your ligaments have more laxity to them because of the hormones raging through your body during pregnancy. This makes it easier for your joints to be out of alignment, thus throwing you off balance. One way to help this is to see a PRENATAL chiropractor. You can find one in your area by going to www.icpa4kids.org and searching for a doc. Yes, there are specialized chiros out there, and you should see one that is specially trained in pregnancy. Hope this helps some.

C., This is normal for some pregnant women. Of course mention it to your doctor at your next appt. That is how I figured out I was pregnant with # 2- tripped all over First Monday one day and my mom asked if I was pregnant. She said her sister was very clumsy when she was pregnant. It happened again with # 3, except I even fell down the stairs twice and at work twice! Just slow down and be very cautious. Be aware that your equilibrium is off right now and the pregnancy weight gain has your body thrown for a loop as well. Good luck!!!

Are you losing any consciousness when you fall? Legs giving out or are you dizzy?

I'd ask my doc to check BP and check your ears - an ear infection can throw your balance out of whack just like being pregnant can.

Could be a lot of things. Equilibruim could be off (middle ear problem), or maybe your body is out of adjustment. You could have some sciatica problems with your legs. Have you thought of seeing a Chiropractor? If your doctor says nothing is wrong, you might consider it. Or just stay home and do nothing until the baby comes. I would hate for you to fall hard and detach your placenta and have some serious problems. Good luck and BE CAREFUL Please!

Definitely see your doctor again. I had dizziness and went ahead and got a head scan with my last pregnancy. It made me feel good that my brain was ok. You could just be preoccupied or off balance with your belly but you should get checked out just in case.

C., My legs used to give out on me & I'd end up on my butt when I was pg. It was the baby pressing against certain nerves doing it. I was WAY pg at that time though!? Also, I don't remember if she ever fell or not, but my sister somehow tweeked her back & neck when she was pregnant & was in total misery all the time till she went to a chiropractor. After the 1st visit, she felt so much better! Every once in awhile it'd start to sneak back, so she'd go in again. I think she only went 2 or 3 times during her whole pregnancy though. She swears she could not have made it through if not for that!? S. :)

It might be where the baby is positioned. I had trouble balancing for awhile and it was because of the pressure on certain nerves that contol leg funtion. I would call if you fell again, they will probably lett you not to worry since the baby is moving, but it always made me feel better to hear them say that!!

Your blood pressure may be falling as you stand up. Suddenly standing up could cause this and make you off balance. Maybe chart your blood pressure through-out the day.
Also your center of balance changes as your tummy grows.
Whatever it is don't let your doctor or you ignore it!
Good luck and God Bless!!!!!

CALL YOUR DOCTOR AGAIN!!! Go to your primary care doctor if the ob/gyn offers no answers. Each of your doctors should know about this. This is too much falling and could induce early delivery if it continues through your pregnancy.

Let your Doctor know again! This is not normal, something is causing it. Have him test your blood sugar levels and your blood pressure. Have him do a "tilt test" to check your blood pressure. (this is where the BP is testing sitting still and then standing up). You may be developing gestational diabetes and when your blood sugar drops, it may be causing the lightheadedness that may be making you fall. You did not give many details as to whether there was any pain in your legs or back before you fall or if you got lightheaded or dizzy, so these are just some thoughts. Whatever the cause, he needs to know it is happening before you do seriously hurt yourself or that precious new baby. Keep us posted and BE CAREFUL!

First of all, Slow down. Your sense balance is off from the pregnancy. Are you on prenatal vitamins? You might need to have your iron level checked. Also how is your blood pressure? If either of these are not normal it can cause you to have dizziness problems. Remember every pregnancy is different. I know all 3 of mine were. I would check with your doctor about the pain in your neck and shoulders. I also agree with him on making sure your feet and legs are under you before you try to move is a good suggestion. I know it must have been embarrassing to fall. But the baby moving is a good sign. You probable didn't cause your baby any harm. But the bump on your head isn't good either. Believe me, your doctor has heard it all and would rather you be on the safe (or concerned) side than just not doing or saying anything. He only knows what you let him know about what is happening to your body. Be safe and call his office. They will let you know if you need to see him or not. If for any reason, you notice your baby not moving for an extended period of time call for an appointment immediately.Hope this will help you.
