I keep on getting bombarded with emails from my MIL all about horror stories of vaccinations. I was just wondering if their are any moms out there whose child got all of their shots according to the CDC schedule and they are turning out just fine... If so, how old are they> TIA
Thank you to everyone and keep the answers coming! I am going to cut and paste this and email it to my MIL :)

Yep...all 3. 19, 15 and 7. No problems, no reactions...no illnesses from not having gotten their vaccinations! Almost everyone I know has their kids vaccinated (100's of kids) with only a couple who do not. I don't personally know anyone who has had any problems.
Whooping cough is coming back due to people not vaccinating their children as are several other devastating diseases. Google "diseases coming back from people not vaccinating" before you make a decision. If *everyone* decided to suddenly not vaccinate their children, we would eventually end up back in the 1800's with millions of children dying from disease unnecessarily. That's my opinion.

My grandson got all his on schedule, as did all of his cousins and at least a couple of his friends that I know of. None had anything worse than a bit of soreness or fever afterward. All are happy, healthy, normal kids, now in the 4-6 year age range.
When I was little (I'm 64), we suffered through some difficult illnesses that are now routinely vaccinated against. Some of my age-mates got seriously ill, and were hospitalized. Some contemporary children whose parents skip their vaccinations also get seriously ill, and some have died. (Horror stories abound on both sides, so I hope you'll do some real research so you can make an informed decision.)

Here is a different perspective (which I admit you didn't ask for, but here it is...)
With our firstborn, we followed the recommended vaccination schedule. At 19 months old, he was diagnosed autistic. Since then, I have done a lot of research and been asked many times if I feel the vaccines had anything to do with his diagnosis. My answer is no. My four-month-old twins will also be vaccinated according to the schedule. Even if there were a connection, my feelings would still be "an autistic child is better than a dead child."
From my research, the one thing I would caution against is going through with the shots if your child has a fever. That the most common denomonator I have found in the tales of children that had severe physical reactions after being vaccinated.
But, yes, the major source of the vaccination theory was debunked and has been proven to have completely fabricated some of his research. Last I read, he may be brought up on charges for the amount of people who failed to vaccinate in the wake of his article and the resulting outbreaks in England. The subject has been addressed on Mamasource before as to what people thing causes autism, but when it comes to vaccinations..... I want my children to be as safe as I can make them.

Most of us. The vast majority I would venture. My children had no issues with the vaccines, two of them were born autistic. Of all the people I have met over the last 50 years, I know one child who had an allergic reaction. That's it. This is all hype and hysteria that your MIL is falling for. Talk to your doctor, read about vaccine "injuries" on the CDC website. Then, read about the illnesses that you are preventing, that is the part of this debate that is missing here. I can tell you this, my grandfather lost his baby sister to the measils, she was 7 years old, and he would still cry about it in his 80's. We live in a time where we no longer lose half our children to death, where we expect our children to go on to out live us, and for most of them to never suffer a life threatening event. Part of why you can even conisder these horor stories (and they are stories) is that we live in a modern world, one where there is little memory of what we are so lucky to be able to protect ourselves from. My grandfather never questioned a vaccine, he thought that they were one of the wonders of the world.
My children are 18, 14 and 11. And they get every modern protection I can give them. My autistic kids are the very last children on earth who could handle getting any of the alphebet soup of illnesses that they are protected from.

First I would like to applaud Leslie M for being so bold. There are many women in her shoes and I haven't met many who respond like her, so good for you, Leslie!!
She also brought up the point I was going to mention that yes indeed, there has been MAJOR news recently about this autism "connection" to vaccines and it is completely fabricated. There are tons of new articles on the topic that have just come out in the last few weeks and in a nutshell this whole theory was driven by a greedy money-grubber.
Please get your children vaccinated. This is not just a personal issue but a worldwide health issue.
I don't mean to be on a soap box, truly, but this is a big issue and I applaud you too for asking for the real facts. Everyone in our house, including my husband and I were vaccinated on time!

Here's the thing, even moms who are worried about shots have to admit that MILLIONS of children have vaccinations with no problems. Their concern is that their child might be one who has an adverse reaction to shots. The big debate is really about how likely that is to happen. Vaccination supporters say it is incredibly rare (like 1 in a million) and anti-vax people say that it's higher (I don't know any exact statistics). The vast majority of people in America have children who a) get their shots on the CDC schedule and b) turn out just fine. The devil of this debate is in the details.
But since that wasn't your question, yes, my children have had all their shots (except Hep A, which is optional) on time and are normal, happy, infuriating 3 and 5 year olds : )

Just wanted to chime in...my daughter is 3.5, she got all her shots on time as was recommended (including seasonal flu/H1N1) and she is perfectly fine. She never had any reactions, no health issues, highly sociable, and she's one of the brightest kids (if not THE brightest) in her preschool class.
We have gone so many years now without outbreaks of polio, mumps, measles, etc. that people no longer are aware how many millions of children were crippled or DIED from these diseases for years before vaccines became available. Imagine being a parent living in fear that your child could get sick with polio and then the heartbreak of having them paralyzed for life because of it. Now with some parents opting out of them, we are starting to see pockets of measles outbreaks and other diseases make an appearance once again. We also have more people traveling around the world who come from countries where vaccination is not as prevalent, making spreading of these diseases that much more likely. Plus, the whole "vaccines causing autism" theory has been debunked and proven to be myth, as others on here have pointed out.

I wouldn't say that severe reactions to vaccinations are rare. You can go to the government's Vaccine Adverse Reporting System online to see that, and it is estimated that the events that have actually been reported are only a small fraction of those that actually exist.
Ultimately, I don't believe you should be looking for your answers to this from your MIL or a discussion thread. I think you should throroughly research BOTH sides from credible, primary sources, consider your situation, and decide for yourself what is best for your family. No matter how you spin it both giving vaccines and not giving vaccines carry risk. You have to decide for yourself which is the greater risk for your situation. An excellent source on vaccines in my opinion is www.mercola.com. This is Dr. Mercola's website. He is a fully accredited, licensed, and highly respected and revered physician. He does consider both sides in his discussions, and he sites all sources - even the CDC.
I will also mention this - take a closer look at WHY the recent medical paper linking autism to vaccines was pulled. It wasn't pulled because the doctor's conclusions were found to be false. It was pulled because the doctor conducted his research in what the medical community considers "unethical manners". He in no way skewed the findings. He in no way falsified the findings. He in no way compromised the testing. He simply did things that people considered "unethical" in his testing. While I am not going to argue if he should or should not have done that (that is for a different thread), I will argue that his findings were valid. The doctor believed that this method of research was the only way to get true results. I believe the medical community (and big pharma) used a loop hole to remove valid research from public view to push their agenda. Once again, I believe our doctors and pharmacy companies should leave it up to US to decide, and taking away valid research from our eyes and then portraying it to be inaccurate are their way of attempting to force us to do what they want. I believe something is inherently wrong with a system that attempts to keep everyday people in the dark about pertinent information regarding decision making in our children's healthcare. Ultimately, read for yourself WHY this paper was removed and what it contained. Don't let me or anyone else tell you if it is valid or not. You may find this link interesting on the subject: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/0.... This is all primary source information.
You may also want to look into the information out there on how many vaccinated children are actually immune at all. Just because someone gets a vaccine injection doesn't mean that they are immune to the disease they have supposedly been vaccinated against. Antibodies in the blood have to be at a certain level for a person to be immune to a disease, and not everyone reaches those levels with vaccination and even with following boosters. The only way to know is if you get a "titer" done. It is bloodwork that measures the level of antibodes against a certain disease that is present in one's blood. If you do choose to vaccinate, I would suggest looking into titering after each vaccine so needless boosters are not given. If your child reaches immunity with 1 or 2 shots instead of 3 or 4 then there is no reason to give the additional boosters. If the doctors say the immunity could wear off then just keep titering each year.
We do NOT vaccinate either of our children (30 months and 5 months), and they are perfectly healthy. At the end of the day, don't let anyone use scare tactics - on either side of the argument - to sway your decision. Scare tactics contain no facts or statistics. They are simply people trying to "win" you to their side using an emotional factor. In our previous Pediatrician's office his nurse flat out lied to try and scare us because we didn't vaccinate. When we put the hard copy of the CDC information in front of her and asked her why she told us differently she just left the room. You can't always believe what people tell you. Don't rely on someone else to educate you on your children's health. Take a proactive role. Educate yourself so you can make the best decision for you.

We have done everything but the flu shot. My almost 2 year old is perfectly fine, some might even arguee advanced. :)
I haven't given her a flu shot and she did have h1n1 last year. There is no real reason that we haven't done the flu shot, just never got around to it this year. It seems like everytime I take a healthy little girl into the doctors office she leaves with some kind of cold, so I try to avoid the place unless she has an appointment.
Leslie M. took my favorite line ever. I say to many of my no-vaccine giving friends "I'd rather have an autistic child than a dead one" While I was pregnant I taught first grade and there was a little girl that had the measles. Thankfully she was fine, but it could have turned out much worse. There was also an episode of Private Practice a while ago about this exact issue and as much as it is a silly show, it really stuck with me.

We started our shots at two weeks and followed the schedule after that, including the annual flu shot. My daughter is just about 18 months now and thriving. We had planned to use an alternate schedule but my kiddo had colic for 10 weeks and I couldn't focus on "principles" when all I wanted was sleep.
Anyway, long story short, the autism/vaccine thing has been debunked and our first pediatrician told me that the combo vaccines (another hot topic) are tested for safety AS combinations.
We're having our second baby in a few days and we plan to do the same thing with her. We waited until the two week check-up just because the baby is learning to do so much, like eating and sleeping and not breathing amniotic fluid, that we prefer to give her some time to adjust.
I vote to be very sure about your pediatrician. This person is the one who'll be answering your frantic phone calls and reassuring you that you're the greatest mom in the world to your kid(s). They should listen to any concerns you have and not blow you off or jump to conclusions because you asked the questions.
(And maybe let your MIL know that the internet is FULL of theories and "systems" to make any parent crazy enough w/o her dropping them straight into your inbox...though I'm sure she means well.)

Both of my boys are fully vax'd and on time and are just fine! I'm a fairly "crunchy" person (cloth diaper, babywearing, breastfeeding past a year, extended rear facing advocate, etc) but vaccinations is one thing I am not at all "crunchy" about. I think there is a very valid reason for them. There is a reason polio isn't a major concern now, b/c we now have a vaccine for it! (along with other diseases that we vaccinate against)
Forgot to add...they are 3.5 and 1.

All four of my kids have always been up-to-date with their shots; the only exception being my 3rd child with one vaccine. When she turned 15 months, she should have had a Varicella (Chickenpox) vaccine, but we delayed it because I was pregnant with my fourth. With that particular vaccine, there is the possibility of passing the virus through the stool for up to two weeks post-vaccine, which could be translate to shingles (herpes zoster) to an adult which could be deadly to a fetus.
Anyway, we've never had any problems AT. ALL. BTW, my kids are 10, 7, 2.75 and 1.25

I have four children... they have had all vaccinations so far, and no problems whatsoever. None at all.
I would appreciate a reduction in vaccination requirements in the future, however... as long as the vaccine is deemed unnecessary. I think that as soon as they are able to, a vaccine should get off the market. I know this has become an increasingly controversial subject. I don't like shots and stuff being put into my kids, BUT I haven't seen ANY evidence of harm at all... and, it is required for important things such as school. I don't want to hold them back based on skepticism.
A side note on shots: I DO NOT, however, EVER give my kids (or me) a flu shot. I'm all for the body's natural immune system for that. And if they get the flu, I'm COURTEOUS enough to keep them out of school until they are no longer contagious, thank you very much;) I know lots of you mommies don't do that:)

I think there is a lot of misinformation out there and lots of celebrities who try to influence people to do one thing or another without a real platform to stand on.
I believe that the diseases that these immunizations protect the kids against are much worse than any possible side effects from shots.

My oldest is 10, my second is 7 and my youngest is 19 months. They've gotten their shots on time, give or take a delay if there is a shortage or we miss an apt because we're sick and have to reschedule. The only one we skipped is the HepB at birth for our third. We did feel that was far to extreme to introduce something like that to an hours old babies immune system. It was not a recommendation for my other 2 but we would have made the same choice. We are not high risk so I am not worried. She will be picking this one up soon though for future protection.
All 3 are perfectly fine. I don't even remember any of them getting a fever or any other reaction. I think the worst we got was some soreness at the injection site. My third may have gotten a tiny case of the runs from the rotavirus but it might have been something she picked up from her 2 brothers too so there is no way to tell.
We also don't get flu shots.

You need to be asking "How many people have seen serious or deadly reactions in their children.?"
Nobody (I know) claims that EVERY child or even a lot of children have bad reactions. BUT SOME CHILDREN DO! Even the manufactures say that most reactions are mild. BUT SERIOUS REACTIONS CAN occur.
So this question is really making a moot point........
This is truly only a decision each family can make for themselves. We all have to do what WE feel is right for our family. If you want to vaccinate, then DO! Your mother-in-law is not in that equation. Now, if your husband is against vaccinating, that would be an issue. YOU TWO need to be on the same page. Not a bunch of moms and you against your mil and husband.........

Hi Johanna,
My daughter got all shots on time - including combo shots- and had no complications. She even got prevnar at 6 weeks or whatever (the pneummococal vaccine for pneumonia, strep and ear infections), which was optional when she was little (not sure what it is now).
The only one we DON'T get is the flu vaccine.
She is 10 1/2.

I know this is a controversial topic for some. My 3 kids (16,13 and8) all had their shots on time and other than a bit of a fever, everything is great. My kids are smart and healthy. I also have had a home daycare for 17 years and have cared for MANY children, all of whom had their shots on time with no problems.

My kids (now ages 8 and 4) both got all shots on schedule. However, with my second child I did have some concerns after haring Holly Robinson Peete and Jenny McCarty talk about their belief of some connection to autism in kids and how their kids are fine until age 2. So if my baby needed 4 shots, I'd get 2 and then reschedule the other 2. That way, she wasn't getting so much at one time into her little system.

I give some tylenol or ibuprofen right before we go. My son (the one who is now 6) would sometimes be a little fussy afterwards and sometimes not. I just wanted to say that this question is kind of stupid. (no offense.) But, of course you are going to have tons of moms who have vaccinated and their kids are ok. Most time, vaccinations don't cause issues. The better question would have been have any kids had adverse vaccination reactions...but you probably don't want to hear about them....

Me! Well, my kids :)
They are now almost 4 (her birthday is Valentine's Day). Her preK teacher told us that my daughter is very bright for her age.
My other daughter is 18 months old and she's perfectly normal. Of course, I think she's exceptionally bright but I might be a little biased :)
I'm sure some one already posted this, but that doctor that linked the vaccines to autism was proved to be a total nut case. His "study" only included a very few families. He had his license revoked.
Ask your MIL if she got her son vaccinated :)

Take a look at what is happening in england because so many parents opted out of vaccinations because of bogus science speculating a link between autism and a vacine.

We attempted to do our shots on time. My kids are now 22, 12 & almost 9. However the baby, now almost 9, was late quite frequently due to our busy lives, moving, or forgotten appointments due to older sib sporting events, but generally within 2 mos. of the 'scheduled' time the shots would be given.
Don't feel like you have to be there on the exact day, like at exactly 2 mos.
We never had any adverse reactions. Just the common low grade fevers. We are all good :)

All three of my children have received all of the vaccinations on schedule and we have had no problems at all, other than occasionally a fever afterwards, but that is a good thing. A fever just means that the immune system is doing what it is supposed to do. Reactions are very rare to vaccines. The problem is that you only hear about the kids that have reactions, so it makes it seem like there is a lot of it, but you never hear about the millions of children who do not have reactions. My kids are 5, 2, and 11 months. For me, the risk of getting the disease far outweighs the risk of a tiny, chance of a reaction. The theory that vaccines cause autism has been proven false, and that guy is now facing criminal charges.

It's good to hear so many people not having problems. Maybe it's hereditary. My sisters had adverse reactions, I did as an adult not as a child, and one of my children is severely allergic to them. I'm nervous to get the shots and won't do it on schedule but the delayed schedule. I think our issues are more of an allergy which we all have food allergies and allergies to medications too. If no one in your family has had problems, that might be a good sign. Look into it if you're worried and talk with your doctor. You can check out knowvaccines.com for more information. Good luck!

The ONLY one we declined and it is not required is Guardisil. We declined that one because it is so new, horrow stories I've heard. I understand it would be ideal for someone who does not have routine, preventative care. However, for us, we do have routine, preventative care and screenings so we opted out of this one. Yes, both of my kids got all of their shots on time with the exception of the chicken pox. The reason for that is because when their Ped wanted to give it to them they were already getting 3 other shots that day so I chose to wait until right before Kindergarten when they had to have them before starting school. We never had any issues.
As with anything medical, there are always risks. There will be horror stories about everything if you look for them. I'm not saying you shouldn't educate yourself, but you (and especially you MIL) also need to realize that we have immunizations for a reason which is to keep our kids healthy. Millions of kids get immunized every day and have no issues what-so-ever.

I had my son get all his shots and he is just fine. No problems what so ever. My mother had 6 children and no problems. I know lots of kids and no problems with shots.
I think that they are there for a reason. Honestly in my opinion, I would rather chance the extremely small chance that my son could get a slight reaction from a shot, then take the chances of not getting them and have him have the BIG chance of getting one of the many diseases coming back nowadays. Watch the news and you will hear of children getting things like whooping cough, H1N1, and so many others that are just as bad or worse, that scares me more than a chance my son will have a bad reaction to a shot.

My daughters are 11, 8 and 5. My husband is a physician and he would not hear of us altering the vaccination schedule in any way. He said the risk of contracting the diseases for which our children were vaccinated so far out-weighed their risk of suffering the statistically tiny chance of suffering serious vaccine effects we would be remiss if we were to alter the schedule. Our daughters were vaccinated on time and we have suffered no ill effects. Our eldest girl is a straight-A fifth grader, our middle daughter is a highly gifted 3rd grader and our youngest in a hilarious, spunky kindergartener. There is no conspiracy operating out there so far as I can tell. We did have dear friends whose daughter came down with a hideous and complicated case of whooping cough after she was not vaccinated for it. I don't know anyone who had negative side effects from vaccines. I hope this helps!

Both of my children got their vaccinations according to our doctor's schedule (with the exception of my son's 1st Polio shot being delayed by about 1 year.) My son has also had a chicken pox vaccination.
Our daughter had a reaction to MMR on the 3rd or 4th shot in the series; however, it was a local infection on the leg, and not related to the MMR medication. Our son had a reaction to the 1st MMR shot in the series. Up all night crying. Both of these times, we ended up in the emergency room, with a baby who's too young to tell you what the problem is. Scary.
But despite all of our fear about getting vaccinations, and fears about getting two shots in one day, all has turned out well, and neither of our kids show any signs of autism.
My son is now 3 1/2, and my daughter is now 1 1/2.
