HELP! How Do I Get My 21-M-o to Stop Taking off Her "Used" Diaper??

She started requesting to use the potty at 16-m-o but about a month ago, when at home, started disappearing/hiding, going in her diaper, taking it off, and then either hand delivering the diaper or (sorry) just the contents to me. I'm considering trying putting her in underwear and seeing if that helps, but we're usually on-the-go A LOT so I'm not sure when I'll get a good chunk of time to work through this method. Please, please, please does anyone have any suggestions? My sanity and my carpet will thank you!

What can I do next?

Hi, H.:

The way we finally broke our oldest (now 17) of potty issues was to put him in clothe diapers with plastic pants. He was almost 2 1/2 when we started this. It only took about a week to break him. He HATED the feel of the wet clothe on his rear end, and we actually finally found him in the bathroom, taking off the diaper and putting it in the diaper pail. When we told him "If you hate the feel so much, why go in the diaper at all? Just use the potty!" It was like a light came on and he started from that day to use the potty.

I know it's a pain to use clothe, but they're environmentally friendly, cheaper and help the child to really FEEL when they are wet or messy. Modern-day diapers are too "dry" to the feel and they make messing in them too comfy. Clothe will make your daughter un-comfy with the idea, hopefully.

Good luck!
Kat

If you want to keep her diaper on, then I suggest duct tape. Works wonders. I've used it on 4 out of my 5 kids to keep them from removing their dirty diapers before I had the chance to change them.

The only thing I could recommend is possibly just keeping shorts or something over the front of the diaper, so that way she has no way to get to the diaper unless she tells you she needs to go potty in the big girl potty. I had to do this with my son for a little while until he learned to leave it alone. Once he learned I got those Huggies Convertables and those were great- teaches them to wear them like regular underwear but if they have an accident, disposable like a diaper. Good luck.
