Hi Moms,
My 9 year old daughter wants a Nintendo DS for Christmas this year. My only problem is that I have found ther are 3 different types, the DS, DSi & DS Lite (if there are more, please let me know!) I am completely confused as to which one to get her. Can anyone let me know the details of them, which one would you recommend, are there certain games that can only be played on certain ones, do I need accessories, etc. Any and all information would be appreciated. Thank you!!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for the advice, I went with the DSi as you all suggested. It was more than I wanted to spend, but it is something, hopefully, she will have for a long time and it has great features that she can grow into. So thank you again, I'm sure my daughter will have the best Christmas ever!! Hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!!

Ds & Ds lite, are basically the same. One is just a lighter, as in weight version, but the al play the same games. I bought my daughter the DS lite, with some brain games and she loves it.

Good luck

Hi M., if you can, go ahead and get the DSi...it's the newest and best one;-)!! My biggest complaint about them (we have 2 DS Lites b/c DSi wasn't out when we got ours)is the games are so small that the kids are constantly losing them. They fall in between the car seats or get left in a pocket, etc. Do yourself a favor and start off holding her accountable for her own games.

After buying the same game 3 times each of my kids now have a small box in a drawer where their games go. Every so ofter I do a game check and if they cannot produce all their games (I keep a list) those poor kids are tearing the house searching for them...they know that there will be consequences.

I'm thinking about up-grading to the DSi but just know the minute I do a newer, better version will come out...LOL!!! To be honest, I really enjoy some of the games as well, I play Brain Age, Deal or No Deal, Flash Focus, etc. (I have my own game box too;-)!!! Best of Luck.

Well, I doubt you'd be able to find a new just plain DS anymore. You'll really need to make the decision between the DS Lite and the newer DSi. The DSi has the ability to connect to the internet and also take photos, plus I think the screen is bigger. My daughter got the DS Lite about a year ago (the DSi wasn't out yet) and of course now wants the DSi because it's the one her cousins have.

There's about a $40 difference in the two, but if you can I'd go ahead and go with the DSi since it is the newer version.

The games can be played on either one, though I think the DSi has some downloadable ones that are exclusive to it. Be sure and get some sort of carrying case to keep the player and games together. If it is going to be used for a long car ride then a car charger is a good investment, but not necessary if a vacation isn't in your near future.

As for games, Animal Crossing is one that all the cousins (from ages 6 through 13) seem to like playing.

Funny... I was looking into this just yesterday. My 6 year old is begging for a DS. My friends told me DSi is way to go. I decided to hold off for now. I think that, even though kids her age have these games, I'm happier for her to play on her leapster for a while longer. More educational games. By 9, though, I think a DS is quite appropriate....

Well, my 8 year-old daughter has the DS Lite, and my 10 year-old son has the DSi. Both are very content with what they have. Another mother was right about the size of the games. Make sure that they keep them in one location for easy access. These little things are so expensive, and they seem to think that mom/dad will just buy another if they can't find it. NOT. However, if you're going to do it, go with the DSi. Who knows how long the DS Lite will be available. Like another mother said, the DS is no longer available. You will need to purchase several games, or they'll get bored. The games are pricey, so you'll probably want to go to Game Stop for them. You'll find them cheaper there. Good luck and may you have an enjoyable holiday season!

The newest 1 is DSi. This allows you to download games onto the device and has a camera.

The second newest is the DS lite. This is smaller than the DS and allows you to play gameboy advanced games at the bottom of the system. You can also sync to another DS lite that is nearby and go head to head if the game allows.

The oldest is the DS. This is the biggest version and I don't know much about it because it's antiquated and the only one I bought for my child was the DS lite; which I like.

HI,

I have an 11 yEAR OLD girl and 8 year old boy, both have the DSI, it is more expensive but it does more and the screen is bigger. It takes pictures and even more important, they can crop them and make them look silly, my kids absolutely love that feature.

Both of my kids had the DS first and then got the DSI's.

my kids ( 7and 12) have the gameboy, DS lite and DSI. The DSI is the latest version and will play all gameboy games, DS and DS lite games. It is a camera as well and they can download music , making it like and Ipod too. I think it would be best to get her the DSI for all the features and funtions it has. My kids make flip books on thiers and picto-chat. definately worth the money and you don't need any accessories except maybe headphones.
