OK - so after more research and thought, I'm thinking the Ereader thing is not for us. We travel by motorhome and while traveling we do not have constant internet. We do have wireless internet at most places we stay though. So for the long 8 hr plus day traveling I am now considering getting my 2 kids a handheld gaming system. I think I like the Nintendo DSi XL. Looks pretty cool. Do you have one and what do you like about it? Do you have a different gaming system and what do you like about that? I haven't had anything like this since the original GameBoy!!! Is it true that with most of them now you can download games from your computer? can those be shared between 2 DSi or do you have to purchase the same game twice?
Thank you for any and all insight! I want to make the right purchase!

What can I do next?

Any of the DS models are great. You CAN NOT download any games with the DS, if two players have the same game they can see each other of their respective screens. Used games for these can picked up at Gamestop for next to nothing. good luck

The DS-3D is the latest and greatest. Of course, that was right after we upgraded to the DSi XL, which is just fine for my 8 year old. It has a camera and if there is a 2 player game, it can be played with a nearby DS as well.
I would strongly look at some used ones at GameStop, as the DS-3D is the newest, there are a lot of DSiXLs and DS lites out there used....

My kids have DS lites (as do I, lol). I can't speak for the newer DSXL and DSi and 3D versions, but it is my understanding that as the models progress they can play the games previously issued for the older models (for example, our DS lites will play DS lite games, DS games and even Game Boy games...but not the games issued for the newer model systems--the DSi or DSiXL or 3D). So DSiXL will surely play all the DS lite games.

The DS lites don't download games from online, but (all the newer models have this also) they have what is called "download play".. which means that 2 different devices communicate wirelessly with EACH OTHER (within a certain range-- inside an RV would certainly be within range of each other, lol). Some of these require both players (or up to 4 players) to each have their own game card, some do not. It varies depending on the game... you have to look at the box to see which is the case on a per game basis. They refer to them as "multi-player" games and there is a picture code (sort of like on the Wii boxes that tells you what accessories are required--nunchuck, balance board, etc) that tells you if you each have to have a game card or not.
No internet service required. lol.
But, you CAN go into stores and download (wirelessly) a game sample to try it out before buying (usually the stores will have a newer released game available to access this way. You just bring your DS into the store with you, use the download feature in the controls and you can play the game. To KEEP the game, you have to buy it.)
