Hi mamas,

I recently bought some used cloth diapers. My dd is about 20 pounds but very skinny, almost 33 inches tall. I purchased 20 size medium, Fuzzi Bunz. They are in great condition except for the elastic is kind of worn. I'm not sure if they just aren't fitting well enough, if the elastic is shot, or/and I am having some repelling issues. Every time my dd does peepee it comes right out the side. I am putting the snaps on the tightest fitting and also tried the next snap up after reading one post that said soemtimes there is leakage if the legs are too tight. Not sure what I am doing wrong here. Am hoping those of you who have lots of experience with cloth can share some of your knowledge with me. I really want to make this work.

Thanks so much for any and all responses.

K.

Strip!! I use hot water 1 tbs of rockin green detergent and a squirt of dawn let soak for an hour. Takes care of the worst diaper cream debackle that we have had. Rinse several times with hot water if possible too. If that doesn't help contact fuzzibunz and get new elastic.
Also contact fuzzibunz and they can help troubleshoot with you. I would suggest you strip because that is always their first answer for you to try.

I would try stripping them first, since they are used, and that is the easiest possible solution. I've never stripped ours, but I've read that you use the blue Dawn detergent. If this doesn't work, I would definitely replace the elastic. This isn't very difficult, especially if you have sewing experience. Sometimes you just need to fiddle with them (which it sounds like you're getting lots of practice at!). Best of luck!

You can test the elastic by stretching it and if it snaps back to it's original length quickly, it should be okay.

I would try stripping first and see what happens there. Just google "cloth diaper stripping" and you'll find it (most people do it with Dawn dish detergent.

How old are the diapers? The elastic on my Bum Genius was worn out too but it didn't cause the diapers to leak. Do you have the original inserts for the Fuzzi Buns? Are you stuffing it properly? Sometimes when I don't make sure my insert is flat inside of the diaper my son leaks out the sides. I would try stripping the diapers too because I cannot imagine any other reason why it would leak so soon after she pees. You say they are in good condition, but what do you mean by that? Like they have been used only a few times? If the previous owners didn't wash the diapers or inserts enought times then the inserts aren't able to absorb the liquid properly and she could be leaking from that. If these diapers are a few years old, even though they look great, they could still be unusable. Hope you find some answers!

My son was (is) really skinny and I had that problem with brandnew Fuzzi Bunz. I did try every possible arrangement of the snaps till I found one that worked reasonably well (enough to make do in a pinch). Sorry I don't have any suggestions about fixing them. I just was glad I only got one package (5) of them and went with another brand (Kushis). Good luck with them!

Hey K.,
This is the unfortunate thing about cloth diapers. Not every type of diaper will fit every child perfectly. And even more so if they have been used. In our case it took three tries with various diapers before we found what worked for us. Our little guy was kind of on the skinny side initially and needed a diaper with tighter fitting legs and so we went with Grovia.
However, the elastic may be stretched out some. You can easily have that repaired if you are willing to invest the money. Here is a link to a website of a person that can do these repairs. www.convertmydiapers.com
