My 10 day old baby will have nothing to do with my left breast. She takes to the right one like a champ, but I'm concerned that if I'm only using one breast, she's not getting what she needs. I've tried pumping it to make it softer, bait and switch, and letting her scream and cry at my nipple. Nothing works. For the lactation consultant she took right to it with no problems. (of course) Did anyone else have this problem and what did you do??? Please help.

Dont worry about it, my daughter and son were very picky about the sides too. It might be just that your right side has milk already or something just keep pumping on the left side till your milk comes in. if it is already in..then just keep trying to get her to take the other side, she will do it.

My first son started off rough with B'feeding. I specifically remember having the same issues. He didn't latch on well and he would ONLY b'feed on my left. By the 2 week mark I was so distressed that I though about stopping. Have you tried differant holds? Practice makes perfect, the more comfortable you are in the position, the easier your baby will feed. I found that introducing him to the breast that he normally refused, during the night while laying on my side, belly to belly, with baby worked. It took some of the awkwardness out and we both became more comfortable. I also started feeding him BEFORE his hunger cries, for instance if he ate every 2 hrs, I would start to try to nurse him at the 1hr and 45 minute mark, this way he was a little more patient with me trying to get him latched on to the other breast and he was more compliant with trying to latch on since he wasn't angry hungry. After a couple of successful feedings (a couple days) it was an easy transition and I no longer had to try to nurse him in advance because we were both already into a groove. Good Luck!

Hi there,

Congrats on the baby girl :)

I had a hard time breastfeeding but rallied through to meet my goal of 6 months (I would have gone longer if I had realized how much formula we would go through!). I had a similar problem and it was a latching issue - he would latch on to the right side perfectly but there was something about the left that threw him off (and it HURT me so badly!). The lactation consultant showed my husband how to help me get our son on the left side (no one told me you need 10 hands to feed a newborn!), it wasn't pretty and he screamed like a banshee but after a couple of days he figured it out. Make sure you get the milk out of that left breast because clogged ducts and mastitis are tough.

Good luck!

I had this problem and I then realized that I was not positioning the baby correctly and the baby was uncomfortable and that was why he was not nursing. I had to nurse him lying down for him to eat. Eventually, I learned to hold him and nurse correctly. This could be a reason why????

B.,
Congrats on your new baby! I'm sure she getting what she needs with your right breast. I think you should just give her time and she will eventually take to your left breast. My daughter was the same day, I really didn't do anything to make her latch on she just. She did only take to one of my breast. Then finally one day she took to the other one. Give her time, try not to get frustrated. Everything will work out. I would definetly pump the one she doesn't take to in the mean time. Congrats once again, and relax!
