I have a 5mo old, breastfed son who for the last couple months has had mostly mucous, slimy poo. When I asked his dr, she said I shouldn't pay such close attention to every little thing and its normal. But I just read in my book that it means tummy irritation! I feel like a bad mom and am so worried that he has been suffering. His dr always shrugs everything off and I feel helpless! Has anyone had any experience with this? I drink a coffee every morning. Dr said that was ok.. He does cry when he poops, which I think is normal and gets gassey sometimes. I remember when his poops switched to this and I can't think of anything I started doing different. I hope someone can please help me figure this out

What can I do next?

I second the previous responses!

First- get a new doctor. find someone who listens to your concerns and doesn't shrug you off. your baby should not be crying with bowel movements and having mucus in his stools.this is the time that he is building many vital functions/organs in his body and he needs to be absorbing as much from his breast mild as possible. when is intestines are inflammed and irritated his food will be moving through too quickly for him to get enough absorption. i think that many docs think to themselves 'is this something i have a drug for? no? ok, nothing i can do.' they are not thinking about how you can help grow the most healthy and happy baby possible.

Second- axe the coffee, any chocolate, dairy, wheat, garlic, onions and brassicca foods like broccoli, cabbage and kale.

Third- get a probiotic that is specific for babies. the only one i know about it called nytagen made by seroyal, a brand only available through doctors. i know for a fact you can get it at the Natural Health Center on SW 1st ave in downtown portland.

I can pretty much promise you that this will clear up within a week with diet changes and the probiotic.

let me know if you have any other questions. i have helped many patients with similar issues.

hi there - I completely agree with the last mom about cutting certain foods out of your diet.
But I have one other suggestion.....find a new doctor. The pediatrician might mean well, but he/she is not taking your concerns seriously. No one knows your baby better than you, and if you can tell he's uncomfortable, then HE IS UNCOMFORTABLE, no matter what his DR says. Also, neither one of my boys cried when they pooped, I don't think that is normal unless it's bothering him.
I breastfed both of my children, one for 1 year, and one for 18 months, and neither one of them had slimey poo (for lack of a better word) but if their BM's did change I could usually figure out that it was something I ate. Cut out peanuts, milk, and coffee, it might really make a difference. Maybe not ALL milk, but if you are a 3 or 4 glass a day drinker, maybe half it. Drink lots of water.
I hope everything turns out all right, and remember that you have the RIGHT to have a doctor that you feel comfortable with, and one who listens to your concerns. L.

You might try eliminating some of "Big Offenders" (dairy, wheat, caffeine) from your diet for a week and just see if it make a difference. If it does improve then gradually add them back into your diet one at a time. Then if it starts up again you'll be able to pinpoint which one is causing the irritation. It might not have anything to do with it, but it's worth a try.

Another thing you might try is acidophilus capsules. You can get it at Rite Aide When my son had mucousy stools that is what my naturopathic doctor had us try (he was 18 months at the time) My six month old daughter is currently on it as well. She was having some digestion troubles and this seems to have done the trick. My dr. just has me give her some on the end on my pinky, for her to suck off (you just open the capsule full of powder and dump it into a little bowl). I do this three times a day and try to get 1 capsule into her every day.

Hopefully these ideas may help you might also think about taking him to a natropathic doctor. I have had great results with this.

Good luck!!

I don't remember what the exact age is that babies start producing mucus but I remember this stage. (I have a friend who calls it the "snurgle" stage.) When my little ones hit this stage, they had slimey diapers, too. My pediatrician said it was because they are swallowing the mucus they're producing (since they can't exactly use a tissue just yet!) so it goes through the digestive tract along with the milk. I didn't do anything differently as far as my diet and the slime decreased and was completely gone when my little ones started sitting up.

It does sound like an intestinal problem, but my second son started cutting teeth at 5 months. Slime can be found during that time also.
