i am going to take my daughter to the doctor in the morning but i wanted to ask you all if you think i should take her to the emergency room! her fever was 102.2 but has since gone down to 99.9 . she seems really off balance and is grabbing her ear. we have been fighting an ear infection so i would be no suprise if she had another one. she has had what my husband calls water poop! it is really bad but she is a little fussy but not too bad she is still runnin around playing and thats why i wasnt very worried.. let me know what you think
It sounds like she's dehydrated. Give her kool-aid or pedialyte. If the fever is not 104 they really don't recommend emergency. A lukewarm bath is helpful for temps also.
I'm a mother of 4 (10,8,4,and 1). I also used to work in peds.
Let me tell you a little about my experience with this. My daughter is about to turn 2, and has went thru those symptoms several times. It all started when she went to daycare though, which is usual. She had high temps usually at night, and it always went down to about 99 when we alternated motrin and tylenol every 3-4 hours. Thats what our doctor told us to do. She would run around like nothing was wrong whatsoever. However, two times she did end up with rotovirus, and once she was in the hospital for dehydration. So, my advice is to take her to the Doctor. If she starts acting different, i.e. not playing or being herself, I'd become a little more concerned and it's your call at that point. My daughters symptoms usually come along with some vomitting as well though. If her urine and feces smell very strong and unusually bad... I would definitaly take her to the hospital, that could be rotovirus and it's very contagious to kids, and can get her dehydrated easily. Have her drink LOTS of fluids, stay away from a lot of milk. Limit it to two -four ounces at a time. Apple juice is a bad one also. If she has to have it, limit that as well. Give her gatorade or pedialyte (not sure how thats spelled) if she will drink it to keep her hydrated. Thats all the advice I was given when my little one had those symptoms. Oh one more thing, kids can be sick as a dog and run in circles for an hour.. it's normal for her to feel bad yet not give up the playtime. I taught pre school for a couple years and saw that many times. Hope everything pans out okay!
My daughter just went through this a week and half ago. She had the 102.8 fever , they claimed there was no ear infection but she was acting like there was one. My gut had said that she had one. After three dr visits and a emergency room trip she was finally diagnosed with a double ear infection. Her fever went down when the ear perforated, the water runny out. They told me that is a good thing because it will get rid of the pressure. I think you need to go in today and get it checked out.
if this isnt her first ear infection if she has had many you might really want to talk to her dr. about taking her to a ent (ears,nose.throat) dr. my daughter has had alot of ear infections in her life and they put ear tubes in 3 times. but i would not take her to the er she will be able to wait until tomorrow to see her dr.
If your daughter seems fine for now and her fever doesn't get any worse I don't think its necessary for you to take her to the Emergency room. But follow your instincts, we aren't there to know if she really needs to go or not. So if you feel that she should go... then you should take her (you are the mom after all). The only thing that I'd suggest is making sure she is well hydrated. If she is having "water poop" then you need to make sure she doesn't become dehydrated because that can cause more problems. So make sure she drinks plenty of pedialyte or gatorade (some juices can cause even worse diarrhea)

I'm approach healing in a different way...naturally! I am a Licensed Massage Therapist. My suggestion is to take her to a Chiropractor. Her vertebrae are out of alignment causing the muscles to tighten over the eustatian tubes thus causing the fluid not to drain from her ears. My son had a double ear infection when he was 1 year old. We took him to the ER and the ER Dr. said he is a better man than me because he was so calm. Of course they perscribed antibiotics. I had just come from a seminar and heard a Chiropractor talk about how they can heal ear infections with a slight adjustment. I put my son on the antibiotics for one day (weekend). On Monday I took him to see this Chiropractor and within 1 day the ear infection was gone! This was the ONLY time my son was on antibiotics...that was 9 years ago. I take him to see the Chiropractor about every 1 to 2 months. He is VERY healthy. I had my daughter adjusted when she was 4 days old! No ear infections! No sickness, nothing and she just turned 2 this last Friday!

I wouldn't bother taking her in to the ER if her fever's down and she's got a dr's apt for tomorrow. I understand the misery that comes from hearing your little one scream in pain but if her fever's down than she's out of danger from that for now and she's fighting it. The dr will be able to diagnose it tomorrow and perhaps prescribe a diff antibiotic. You may want to start considering tubes depending on how frequent the ear infections have been....
If you still want some reassurance, why not call the dr's after hours number? They will be able to contact the dr and have him/her call you.
