My son's timing is right before we have to leave, too.
Ugh.
My son takes 20 mins minimum to poop too.
I think it's a male thing.
Here's why I say that:
When I have to go, I know! I go sit down & bam it's done (TMI sorry).
My husband, dad, every single guy I have ever dated?
They sit down, read, work on it etc for 15-20 mins.
I cannot for the life of me understand this.
Must be a ritual they have & they must need to "work at it".

Can I ask why you have to literally watch him while he is going? I just always told DD to call me when she was ready to be wiped.
I think a lot of people find sitting on the toilet very relaxing... he may just be one of them.
Make it safe for him to stay on the potty by himself and just check in with him every now and then... maybe if you are not around to keep him company he will be done faster too.

Yes!!! What is it with boys and pooping??? My son does like to fiddle and play with toys while he poops ( his equivalent to reading a magazine or book). But I have been in there with him when we're out someplace and he has no toys and he truly does take forever to poop. I have no advice for you. I just wanted to say that I know what you're talking about and I think it's a male thing...

SO funny you posted this! Last night my son (23 months) discovered that he not only could pee in the potty but he could poop there too! And then we sat there for 20 min as he pooped and then decided he needed to go more and on and on... HE truly enjoyed sitting there and concentrating. IT was hilarious but that newness will wear off for me im sure! I thought to myself- 20 mins! I hope its not like that every time. Good thing he doesn't have an iphone to look at like my hubby! I think giving him his privacy is a good idea. Also, do you have a stepping stool to rest on while you're waiting? Poor thing! Its so hard in those last few weeks! Good luck!

My son doesn't take as long, but he does take a good 15 minutes! He loves to just sit on his potty for a long time, just in case more is going to come out. And he too loves to go right before we need to be out the door!

I leave the room and let him have privacy. If I was you, I'd really start working the potty training. Just take him when you go. Since he has the poop part down, he just needs to learn the timing on the pee. It shouldn't take long, a month. You could easily have him trained before the baby comes.

I wouldn't hang around all that time, I'd just check on him every few minutes. i don't stay with my little guy if he's taking awhile, just within earshot so I can check his wiping and make sure he washes his hands. One of my brothers used to do the same, I walked in one day to grab a towel when he was 4 or so, and he was leaning back and lounging on the toilet ; )

You could also tell your son 45 minutes before you actually have to leave that it's time to go, hopefully he'll get done before you really have to leave, lol!

My friends and I joke that our kids always have to go right as we are leaving somewhere. My daughter did this too. It was a phase. I simply taught my stubborn kiddo to holler when she was done. Not ideal, I know. But it beats sitting through the potty show forever each day!
