The metal lice combs (like the ones from Walgreen's listed below) are fine, plus you can boil them to sterilize them.

I HIGHLY recommend the Terminator lice comb. It does not pull their hair out as long as you make sure to comb all tangles out first. We had two recurrences of lice, once after treating with a prescription, before I got this comb; zero since. This comb has grooved teeth, so it holds on to the eggs. The drugstore metal combs do not and do not work as well. I do a lice check every Sunday now, it's just part of the Sunday bedtime routine.

You don't need one. At all.

Get a magnifying head gear, then use it to comb through the kids hair sectioned into 1" sections. You can sit the kiddo down in front of you with a towel over your lap.

Here's how to get rid of head lice.

Wash the kiddo's hair in normal shampoo then condition it. Comb out all the tangles. Rinse it. Do NOT towel dry it. Leave it pretty wet. Head lice breath air, water makes them sluggish and very slow.

Sit the kiddo right down and section off most of their hair. Go through the hair by looking at it with magnification. If you see a live bug pull it off and drop it in a glass of water. You can use your fingernails or a pair of tweezers.

The bug will drown.

Look at the section from the roots all the way to the end. You can use a regular rat tail comb for this or a little black comb like men like to use.

Once you have this down, systematic, you won't take more than 20 minutes for even the longest head of hair. My granddaughter has hair down to her hiney and I check it every Saturday morning. It takes me about 15 minutes because I have trained myself to spot bugs and eggs and other stuff. If I don't see any signs of them I go quickly. If I see something suspicious I stop and take more time. IF I see anything alive I take more time. BUT once you are doing this every week you will be experienced and very good at it.

Using chemicals on your child is so dangerous. It's pesticide, it kills things that are alive, like us. It soaks through the skin and does get inside our kiddo's.

IF you just can't do it and have to use a lice shampoo then use Lice MD. It's different.

But you do not need to buy a comb and put your kiddo through that horrid treatment. They pull the hairs out by the root because they don't slide through the hair right.

Please go to headlice.org for solid common sense information.

I live in an apartment complex and this summer it was horrible with lice. One of the neighbors does hair she had said to use regular Listerine (yellow color & can be the store brand), put it in a spray bottle and spray hair down especially the roots and put a shower cap on, leave on for about 2 hours, rinse hair after 2 hours, the in another spray bottle put vinegar in it (it can be apple cider or white), spray hair down again like before, put shower cap on for about an hour, rinse and condition well. When I did my daughters I went through her hair in sections. I did not use a comb if I found anything I picked it out with my nails and wiped it on a paper towel. During the process of it sitting on her hair I took bedding off and all that and sprayed the beds and couch down with the Listerine. I also read on a blog of a mother that did this same thing for her kids and even put a little of Listerine in the laundry with her soap. The smell is strong and the lice don't like it so it helps keeps them away. I also spray my kids book bags down at least once a month, their coats, and anything else that goes back and forth to school. And once a month I will spray some of the Listerine in my daughters hair when she gets home from school and then just pull it up until she gets her shower that evening. I know you asked about a lice comb but this does work and thought I would share.
