Head Thrashing???

Hi mamas,
So my 10 month old son has started to thrash his head around lately. He used to do it every once in a while when he was tired but lately it seems like he does it all the time. He does it while in the high chair, during a diaper change, and other times throughout the day. He is shaking his head back and forth like he is saying no but they are real fast hard shakes sometimes banging his head on the side of the highchair. I don't think it is any type of siezure because he can stop at anytime and usually smiles afterward if not the entire time while doing it. He has a little bit of a head cold..could it be from that?? Im not sure if this is just a new learned behavior that he thinks is funny or if it is something to be concerned with. Is there anyone else out there that has seen this behavior in their child

What can I do next?

Hey A. - Take a minute to "thrash" your head about. doesn't that look funny when you stop? Don't you feel silly?
That's why your son does it.

At ten months, your son is still learning how his body operates, and will probably engage in other repetitive behaviors that seem odd to you. The fact that he can stop and smile at any point during the shaking suggests that he's just experimenting.

He could also have discovered that a strong stimulus like that distracts him from some other sensation that he does not like, like crabby tiredness, or a stuffy nose or earache/headache. If it changes in nature, becomes more persistent, or he actually hurts himself while head-banging, don't hesitate to talk to your pediatrician.

There was a similar request not too long ago, and I remember someone saying it can be something neurological (rare), but both my kids did it-one still is-and I've seen other kids do it!

I think it's a fairly normal little kid/baby thing.

Hi, I take the cautious approuch...run it by your dr. Could his ears be bothoring him from his cold? See if this is common in kids his age, just to be on the safe side, or maybe it could be something more serious...run it by your dr. take care

My son is 4 and still does it sometimes...mostly in the car now. It makes your son's head feel strange and it makes things look funny. I would try to ignore it for the most part. He may never "stop" doing it, but he probably wont' do it to that degree for long. Since he has a head cold, you could always get his ears checked just in case, but I think it's pretty normal. I used to love getting dizzy (my nickname was Dizzy Lizzy) and that was one thing that did it. I would only intervene if he looks like he might hurt himself...if you don't pay much attention, he won't think it's "fun" for long.
