AHH I am so mad, the daycare found lice in my older daughters hair. she is in 3rd grade and attends the daycare for before and after school care. My youngest is there all day. When they found it they did not check my youngest hair, needless to say she has it too. We washed all the bedding and pillows and bagged up their stuffed animals. we cleaned out their hair acc. drawer, We purchased fairy tales hair product from the local salon to get rid of the lice. I spent an hour on each girls hair and my husband did as well. Anyone have any other advice or anything I need to do that I didn't do already? Thanks for your help,

What can I do next?

Just follow-up with a second treatment on their hair in about 10 days to get any newly hatched lice. There is always that one little nit that you didn't get that will start the infestation all over again. I have had a real problem with my granddaughter and lice over the years. She has long, thin hair and they apparently love it! I put Coconut hair grease in her hair every day now. Not only does it make the hair slick so lice eggs won't attach, it has made her hair absolutely beautiful. She could ride a motorcycle without a helmet and still run a comb through her hair that's how conditioned it is!

Hang in there...lice is just gross. But keep in mind that they only like CLEAN hair. Don't forget to vacume/spray all your funiture and the rugs. You also do not need to buy expensive hair treatments. Find a hair conditioner that you like and on DRY hair load it on. Then put a shower cap over their hair and leave it on for about an hour or so. Then comb the conditioner through with the lice combs, then wash as you normally would. You have to do this every couple of days for about 2 weeks to make sure that you have rid yourself of all lice & eggs. You can also use olive oil instead of conditioner. The advantages are NO CHEMICALs that frankly lice have been building a resistence to and it's far cheeper. Lice is not easy to get rid of...and it does require more than one treatment. I know some Moms that treat their childrens hair with this method once a week "just in case". Using hair products such as hair spray and gells as well as keeping long hair tied back & up will help prevent (sometimes) any future outbreaks. Good luck & hang in there!

You sound like you got it covered. My son had two bouts with lice about three months apart last year and it was so frustrating.
I am a chemicals girl and used NIX on my son and me as a precaution (no one was going to sit and pick nits out of my hair, ya know?) and was SOOO glad I did. . . All the same precautions you did - vacuum, clean house, bag up soft toys.
I also made sure to wash all the coats, hats, scarfs.
Freaky as it may sound, I also had my son wear the little beanie caps before he put on his coat to go out to play (we had a huge snow and were in house for 8 days!) or when he was playing with his brother. . .
Good luck! oh and my hairdresser friend concured, lice like clean hair, so let the kiddos go a few days inbetween washing - dry shampoo is great!

the Fairy Tales stuff is a preventative not something that is supposed to get rid of them once you have them...I hear the mayo thing works but I haven't tried it...I found out my daughter had it last week and boy was it BAD...I bought the Rid shampoo and the spray...washed and bagged and combed throught her hair with the lice comb...we have washed our hair 4 times in that stuff because her infestation was that bad (and I get the heebie jeebies just thinking aobut it) I THINK they are all gone but I still plan on shampooing with the Rid once or twice more...I think it is overkill but I was sooooo grossed out by how bad she had it....her BFF stayed the night before we discovered my daughter had it, her mom did the mayo thing and said it worked and her hair looks so shiny and smooth now

Oh man...I remember this! We have 4 kids needless to say our house was a ZOO! Chemicals didn't work...called my mom hysterical. She said put mayonnaise in everyone's hair and put a shower cap over sleep in it. Next morning spray warm water massage dried mayonnaise and nit comb. HOLY cow...did it work! We had to wash our hair with dawn to get mayonnaise oil out and follow with conditioner. Use that nit comb! I am grateful we had lice though...my oldest son suffered with cradle cap for years...I mean bad! We had tried every prescription/over the counter shampoo we could find. After the mayonnaise treatment it all cam out! Without hurting him! I couldn't believe it I hadn't seen his scalp in that area for years! So all the hassle was worth it in the end. Good luck...just a part of life!

(I posted this in November for someone else...hope it helps you! sorry you are going through this!)

In May, my daughter's BFF spent the night here (and we had a total of 6 kids spending the night) and she had lice, knew she had it and didn't say a word! (mom should have kept her home!) A few days later, my daughters head was itchy was itchy, I didn't think much of it...trimmed her gorgeous, blonde hair, that was down to her waist, on Friday night. Sat, she was still itching really bad...so as a precaution, I thought I should check for lice...and OMG...she was infested! I was horrified, not knowing where they came from! I went into hyper clean mode! Hubs, son and daughter all power cleaned...we washed every piece of bedding, rug, curtains, and toy we could (and everything else went in plastic bags in the garage...O, and we threw all brushes, and hair things in the freezer for a week) I ran to the drug store for the shampoo (had to buy 2 kits since she had such long hair.)

**I should say that we went so overboard w/ cleaning because I run a home daycare AND we were leaving for a Disney trip in less than a week w/ FOURTEEN people!!!!!

So...I treated her w/ the shampoo, and spent 4 long hours combing through her hair. The next day, I called the pharmacist and doc for advice...both said I could treat her again sooner than directions said and that it would make my life easier if we cut her hair (the reason it was so long was because she planned on donating it to Locks for Love.) After many tears from her and I, we cut it and then I continued to comb through it 2x a day and I also made her sleep w/ Olive Oil in her hair, covered by a shower cap for 3 nights. (a friend, who is a hairdresser and has dealt w/ this suggested it...it suffocates the lice.) I felt awful making her do this...it was gross and uncomfortable!

I had to close the daycare and she missed school...so there was a lot of cost to this! All because a mom was irresponsible and "didn't think" when she let her daughter spend the night! Anyway...it can be gotten rid of...but I will tell ya...I hope to NEVER go through that again! Best of luck!

Good Morning!

I discovered my daughter had gotten head lice last Christmas Eve. I was completely livid! I immediately ran out and bought the most expensive item on the shelves figuring it would work. No such luck! The only remedy that I found to have worked was putting olive oil on her hair. I mean soaking her hair with olive oil. Then put a hair net over and let it sit for about an hour to an hour and a half. Rinse it out and put some vinegar on and let that sit for about an hour. You then shampoo the hair and comb through to get any of the nits out. This was the only thing that worked!

Good luck!

My daughter has had it twice. The first time I spent hundreds on everything I could find to get rid of it. The second time, I took a more relaxed approach and it worked just as well. I'd highly recommend a Robee electric comb. It takes some practice to get the hang of it but it is a Godsend. I'd also recommend the Licebuster comb someone else recommended. When the note came home from school this year about lice, I started checking her heard...never found anything. Then we busted out the Robee comb and literally found 2 adults. (Later found out they'd travelled from her friend at the bus stop when they would play video games together and lean their heads against each other) It took two weeks of nightly combing, but it took care of them without the nasty chemicals or oils. It's not the end of the world. There's no need to go crazy cleaning your house. Change the pillow case and sheets. Be careful about sharing combs, pillows, etc. Use common sense and don't panic.

By far, the best comb is the Nit Free Terminator. It's a stainless steel comb that doesn't need any chemicals! We used it on our daughter last year. My sister bought it after she paid $100 per hour to have a Lice Specialist come to their house and educate them. The woman used the exact same comb. Comb only costs about $11!!

I went through this a couple years ago with both my daughters. My oldest got it first and then got it again a couple of weeks later and gave it to my youngest. The best advice I can give you is to make sure you comb out all the nits. If you don't, then they will just come back again. That is why my daughter got it the second time. Everyday when they came home from school they would get their snack and I would go through their hair section by section and pull out the nits with my fingers. It took several days but it was worth it. They never came back after that. The best way to see them is in the sunlight which I know isn't ideal with the cool weather.
I also had them wear shower caps at home. It made me feel better about them not spreading through the house. The girls loved it. I found some caps with polka dots and flowers. They did look pretty cute.
There is another product out there called CLEARLICE. Just google it if your interested. I highly recommend it. It smells good and it isn't hard on their hair or scalp. It also loosens the nits so they are easy to pull out. I always keep some on hand just in case. Good Luck!

Put Tea Tree Oil in their shampoo. Lice hate tea tree oil. You can also use Paul Mitchell's tea tree shampoo. It will also help to prevent future occurances of lice. You will also have to really go through their hair with a fine tooth comb every night for at least a week or two to make sure you got all the nits out.

Go to headlice.org. Most of the stuff that parents do to "get rid" of head lice is just old wives tales and only makes work for the parents. Please go to the lice website for good basic information.

You don't need to buy anything to get rid of head lice. There are lots of home remedy's that work more effectively. I was at the ER with someone and the lady at the front desk and I were talking. She said how she had ended up getting head lice while she was pregnant. She said the ER docs took her to the back and poured a bottle of white alcohol all over her head. It kills the live bugs and make it where the glue that holds the nits on is dissolved too.

I thought that sounded like it would dry out hair but little one wanted to try it and it did not do anything to her hair. The bugs were a thing of the past but the hair was still fine, no damage.

Have them use a lice repellant shampoo, too. We went through this last summer at our house w/ 2 kids and it seemed like it kept going back and forth between them. I made both of them use the shampoo until it was gone and that seemed to stop the cycle. I like the Licefree product if you have to purchase something else. http://www.licefreee.com/ The spray is better than the gel, smells like licorice and I think the fact that you don't wash it out immediately helped, too. I made sure to do it on a weekend so the girls could leave it on overnight and wash it out the next morning. The MD did say you need to treat again in 7 to 9 days even if you don't see any nits just to make sure that you are rid of them all.
