He Won't Eat and He Keeps Throwing Up! What Gives?

I don't really know what's going on here. I think it might be teething and/or an anti-growth spurt. But with the last few days, Connor has pretty much stopped eating, and just about every time we sit him down to eat, he ends up vomiting. Sometimes his whole meal. Seems like the only times we can get him to eat is when he's playing and wants to snack on "cookies" which is what he calls all the crackers and cookie type things we give him. He is still drinking the soymilk pretty well, but I have noticed a decrease in wet diapers. And he's been Mr. Fussbucket the last few days as well. The reason I think it might be teething related is because of the way he's been chewing on his fingers while he's whining, and because giving him teething tablets seems to help. He also just went through a growth spurt where he was eating us out of house and home, so I'm wondering if he's just not in need of as much food at the moment because we hit "pause" on growing for the moment.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

So What Happened?

We've been treating him for teething (teething tablets and Motrin this evening), and that has seemed to make the biggest difference. He's also not spit up today. I've had a couple other Moms tell me their baby's reflux has triggered when they are teething, so I'm pretty sure it's related. My other thought is that since it hurts to chew he's been trying to swallow food whole which makes him gag and then spit up. Anyway, so far so good, and I apprecieate the insight. If he gets any worse or there is no improvement, I'll put a call into the pedi.

I would call his doctor since you said he is having less wet diapers I would be really worried about him getting dehydrated.
Yes he may be teething but that would not explain the decrease in wet diapers or the vomiting. My daughter is teething too & she too does not want to eat & is very clingy & fussy. Good luck.

N.,
Hi again. I think your instinct is correct. It all sounds like teething. Try some teething rings for him? They make them with saline water inside of them which would be safe for him. Perhaps a teething blanket? They make them with rubber corners that have different textures for their gums. Here is a great article I was reading last night about teething. Perhaps it will help you! http://www.babycenter.com/refcap/toddler/toddlerills/todt...
Try some "cold mushy fruits" for him to snack on. Considering he just came off a growing spurt, the small snacking a few times a day will be fine for him. Also try getting more water in him? If he can tolerate Watermelon.. that would-be great for him! Lots of antioxidants and water to help him stay hydrated.
Keep up the great work!

Hi N.,

There is a virus going around I don't think it is the teething. You need to more fluids and and bland food into his system so he won't become dehydrated. The first few hours the peds doctor is going to tell you give him clear liquids apple juice peidalite etc. Then if he keeps that down, you give apples rice toast cracker mashed potatoes etc. If he keeps that down then you start reintroducing solids and milk. The doctors call it the Bland diet with kids have dieherra and or vomitting. Teething will not cause vomiting. He also might have acid relux too. I would take him to the doc just to be sure. My sons are never never sick but over christmas did get the virus that kept them vomiting. If your son usually eats and drinks well and he is not now there is something wrong.

hi nikki,i have a 2 year old son and had the same problem except that he seemed to be hungry but he would vomit every time he ate, he was about 13 months when these happened and when i called my pediatrician she said that it could be normal but after a while he had an exam done called varium swallow(i think)and everything was normal, like 2 months later he started trowing up everytime i put him down at bedtime and would cry so much and i also used to give him teething tablets but he would vomit. 2 months later we noticed two new molars, so i don't know if your case could be teething and he is just miserable but i would suggest you talk to your pediatrician if this keeps happening for too long it could also be reflux that why he had this exam done. good luck

Since you mentioned the vomiting, I think there may be more of an issue other than teething and a slowed growth spurt (which a lessened appetite would indicate). You didn't really expand on his vomiting (or his health history), so I wonder if he caught a stomach bug. It would explain his getting sick and loss of appetite. If has been regularly throwing up for a while, I would investigate other things like food allergies and reflux. I would be concerned about his fluid if there is a big decrease in wet diapers as well. All considered, I think you should contact your doctor's office and speak with the nurse practitioner that most ped's should have on call for these types of things. They know you, your child, and your child's health history and can best diagnose and/or advise you on this matter. Good luck!

As for the teething

It sounds a little more serious than just teething. If he's continuously throwing up and not having wet diapers, he might be dehydrated. I would make sure he has lots of water and fluids. If it continues, you might want to take him to the doctor.

On the food part, my son is also very picky and he does seem to eat a lot less after a growth spurt.

Soymilk can be dangerous for toddlers or anyone growing. It has plant estrogens in it that can affect the body. Try putting him on rice milk or almond milk and see if the vomiting stops. It could be an overdose of soy....

That's tough! Have you talked to your pediatrician? I would probably chalk it up to teething if it weren't for the vomiting. If you haven't taken him to the doctor, maybe you should, and when there ask about any allergies he may have developed; perhaps that's what caused this sudden change in his eating habits. Good luck!

I would put a call into the doctor since it's frequent vomiting and decrease in wet diapers. It sounds like it could be an GI problem. Best to just get that ruled out before he looses too much nutrition.

N., my kids have had a bad case of teething but never to the point of vomiting. if it were a stomach bug vomiting would be accompanied or switch to diahrrea.
now, teething causes a decrease in the amount of foods kids eat, or don't eat at all.
if i were you i'd get him in to a doctor or urgent care if the doctor cannot see him immediately.
don't know if he is old enough for pediasure that's something you could ask the doctor as well. have you tried yoghurt, applesauce etc, even just plain toast?
but yes, please do get him to see the pediatrician. does not sound like the usual stuff that goes on with teething
