Have You Ever Had a Subchondral Lesion, Specifically Ankle Joint?

So my MRI came back and my Dr. appointment is on Monday am. The nurse called today and said the MRI shows a bone defect and said I have a subchondral lesion in my ankle joint. Part of the treatment includes Platelet rich plasma, whatever that is.

I've been in pain for months and it has gotten progressively worse so I finally went to the podiatrist and now I hope I have not limped around too long and caused further injury.

Anyway, if you have ever had this or know someone who has, please let me know what I might possibly expect.

Thanks so much and Happy weekend to everyone!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much Christine! I'll let you know what happens!
Thank you Doris! I'm also working with my ortho team as well. I'll get some very detailed blood work results back on Monday as well. I agree to have 2nd opinion and another set of eyes reading test results!

Well... Dr appt today! Looks like we are moving toward the platelet therapy. I am meeting with another Dr for 2nd opinion before procedure scheduled early next week. Per the Dr.. 5 days if he$$, he sent me home with crutches today to practice. But after that no weight on foot rule after 5 days, we're looking up. Only 3 weeks in boot and back to normal exercise wit full recovery 6-8 weeks.

Thank you all for input. It sucks because this is the week I move my daughter to get condo. Dr gave me go ahead to go upstairs once.... Do my thing then leave. Lots of emotion because I want to help her if she wants it. Thanks to all!!

It's great that you've gotten the MRI. However, I urge you to take it to an orthopedic specialist for a second opinion.

You can't always go by one reading of an MRI. I've had a couple of scans that have been read in different ways. In other words, same problem, but how the scan is read makes a difference in how the doctors approach treatment.

A second opinion won't hurt, and you'll feel more confident in your treatment. Thinking of you...

Hi TF!

I'm in clinical diagnostic testing but about ten years ago I worked in the research arena with blood products (equipment for use in sorting and testing of blood but used for investigational/research purposes not human patient use).

I'm not savvy with the subchrondral lesion but a little bit on the platelet rich plasma. Plasma is the liquid component of blood. They have you donate your own blood, they spin it down and they take out the parts they need adding cytokines and growth factors (this is what I sold) to essentially help you regenerate the parts that are damaged.

I don't believe it is clinically validated but seems to be used frequently for pro athletes for ligament, joint and muscle issues. I would do it, seems pretty progressive to me. They were pretty snappy with the MRI results so that is nice. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

ooh man!!! I'm sorry!!

I've not had to deal with anything like this!! I do have a bone defect on my right heel - that causes my tendon to stretch and can make walking painful. Yes, I could have surgery to "fix" it - but the tendon would need to be repaired as well - and that means 6 weeks of no driving...THAT would be a pain in the rear!!

The platelet plasma - USUALLY that means they take your blood or someone else's blood that matches yours - and take out the stuff they need - marrow or the platelets - and then put it BACK in your body so your body can work it. It's not a blood transfusion - it's more like a "transplant" - I THINK - DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THIS!!

If this was me? I would go to an orthopedic surgeon as well as another podiatrist - with my MRI results - and get their opinions on how to proceed.

Good luck!!

Ooh that stinks. I don't have that but I found out about 1 1/2 ago my patella sits to high in my knee joint (patella alta) as a result since I learned to walk my cartliage has been wearing away so now I have cyst, bone spurs, torn, loose and floating cartliage in my knee joint which makes my knee pretty unstable. PT and cortisone injections have helped a lot though and I was lucky that I live near an orthopedic who doesn't just specialize in knees but knees with my very rare condition. I sure hope the treatment your doctor prescribed can help you too.
