I always have ear candles handy. They dont work on me, not sure why, but i have people i know who are skeptics that swear by them and come to me to borrow them. I warm up garlic-oregano-olive oil and put a drop in the ear. then i wait 5 minutes and administer an ear candle. Usually just one. Then i let them borrow my heating pad and lay down on it.
i seriously have done this to like 10 different people. I keep them handy, just as i do lots of other natural treatments, like goldenseal for toothaches, echinacea and vit c for the cold season, etc....
originally this idea surfaced in mexico, mothers would roll up newspaper in a cone and do this process in their children's ears. This has been common practice for like 100 years or more. I think this is a little too dangerous for my liking, The candle is made in such a way that it prevents wax from dripping, and the fire is contained. With proper supervision this is not dangerous and i would do it to my own children. But as with everything else there are skeptics, people ready to debunk anything that is not narcotic, or specifically prescribed by a physician. There are also too many motives for discrediting natural remedies. Simply because they are cheaper, eliminate the need for a doctor, and can easily be obtained and used by the people.
I tend to take evidence on both sides of the spectrum into account when finding a remedy for something. My own personal trial and error is also sufficient.
As iv'e said, ear candles don't do a thing for me, i find that oregano oil, diluted by olive oil dropped into the aching ear, followed by heat will solve my earaches like magic. But a few of my friends would disagree with me, some of them are now ear candle enthusiasts. It really did seem to work on them.
